{"id":10792,"date":"2010-09-01T19:35:12","date_gmt":"2010-09-01T19:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/?p=10792"},"modified":"2026-02-07T07:30:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T07:30:16","slug":"english-translations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/english-translations\/","title":{"rendered":"English Translations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>E<\/strong><strong>nglish <\/strong><strong>T<\/strong><strong>ranslations <\/strong>of Plato\u2019s <em>T<\/em><em>imaeus<\/em> and <em>C<\/em><em>ritias<\/em> have been freely available since 1793,when <a title=\"thomas taylor\" href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/taylor-thomas\/\">Thomas Taylor <\/a>produced his translation.<\/p>\n<p>In 1804, Taylor published the first English translation of the entire Platonic corpus. In 1871, <a title=\"jowett\" href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/jowett-benjamin\/\">Benjamin Jowett <\/a>produced\u00a0 the most commonly quoted version of the Atlantis Dialogues, principally because his work is now out of copyright. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/davis-henry-n\/\">Henry Davis\u00a0<\/a><\/span>produced a translation of Critias in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/stewart-john-alexander-n\/\">John Alexander Stewart <\/a><\/span>also offered a translation of Critias early in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>1925 saw <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/lamb-w-r-m\/\">W.R.M. Lamb <\/a>publish a translation of some of Plato&#8217;s works and today his rendering\u00a0of both <em>Timaeus<\/em> and <em>Critias <\/em>is used by the <em>Perseus Digital<\/em> <em>Library<\/em><sup>(a)<\/sup>. In 1929, <a title=\"lewis spence\" href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/spence-james-lewis-thomas-chalmers\/\">Lewis Spence <\/a>included a composite version of the Atlantis texts in <em>The History of Atlantis<\/em>, using the English translations of Jowett and <a title=\"archer hind\" href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/richard-dacre-archer-hind-new\/\">Archer-Hind <\/a>for <em>Timaeus<\/em> and the French translations of <a title=\"jolibois\" href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/jolibois-jean-francois\/\">Jolibois<\/a> and <a title=\"negris\" href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/phocion-negris\/\">Negris<\/a> for <em>Critias<\/em>. <a title=\"bury\" href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/bury-rev-robert-gregg\/\">Rev. R. G. Bury <\/a>gave us what was arguably the best translation of the Dialogues (Loeb Classical Library, 1929) and is included at the beginning of this book. <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/cornford-francis-macdonald-n\/\">Francis M. Cornford <\/a>(1874-1943) published his <em>Timaeus<\/em> (Bobbs-Merrill, 1937)<\/p>\n<p>Sir <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/lee-sir-henry-desmond-prichard\/\">Desmond Lee <\/a>produced a new English translation in 1972 (Penguin)<\/p>\n<p>Professor Diskin Clay delivered an acclaimed translation of <em>C<\/em><em>ritias<\/em> (Hackett Publishing, 1997). Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/zeyl-donald-j-n\/\">Donald J. Zeyl <\/a>offered a new translation of <em>T<\/em><em>imaeus<\/em> (Hackett Publishing, 2000). Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/kalkavage-peter-n\/\">Peter Kalkavage <\/a>published\u00a0a highly regarded translation of <em>T<\/em><em>imaeus<\/em> (Focus Philosophical Library, 2001).<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/waterfield-robin-n\/\">Robin Waterfield <\/a>offered a new translation of Critias and Timaeus<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/w-z\/\"><sup>0922<\/sup><\/a><sup>]\u00a0<\/sup> as well as a revision of Desmond Lee\u2019s translation of them by<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/johansen-thomas-k\/\">Thomas Kjeller Johansen.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><sup>(a)<\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perseus.tufts.edu\/hopper\/collections\">https:\/\/www.perseus.tufts.edu\/hopper\/collections<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>English Translations of Plato\u2019s Timaeus and Critias have been freely available since 1793,when Thomas Taylor produced his translation.
