He qualified as a mining <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Fokion_Negris_080.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-58559 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Fokion_Negris_080-289x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Fokion_Negris_080-289x300.jpg 289w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Fokion_Negris_080.jpg 729w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 289px) 100vw, 289px\" \/><\/a>engineer and obtained a degree in mathematical science. On his return to Greece, he became involved in politics and eventually served two terms as Minister for Finance.<\/p>\n<p>N\u00e9gris propounded the idea that Atlantis had been destroyed by glacial ice<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/n-r\/\"><sup>486<\/sup><\/a><sup>][<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/n-r\/\"><sup>487<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup>. In 1904 he published, in French, a volume on ancient underwater ruins<sup>[<\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/n-r\/\">686<\/a><\/sup><sup>]<\/sup>, which was republished in 1980.<\/p>\n<p>In a communication to the 1905 International Congress of Archeology in Athens on &#8216;the question of Plato&#8217;s Atlantis&#8217;. He noted in particular: <em>\u201cSo the agreement between Plato&#8217;s story and geological phenomena continues down to the smallest details. All doubt must cease; Atlantis existed.<\/em> &#8220;<sup>(a)<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>N\u00e9gris\u2019 1905 French translation of <em>C<\/em><em>ritias<\/em> was combined by <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/spence-james-lewis-thomas-chalmers\/\">Lewis Spence<\/a> with that of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/jolibois-jean-francois\/\">Jolibois<\/a> to provide a composite translation in <em>T<\/em><em>he <\/em><em>H<\/em><em>istory of <\/em><em>A<\/em><em>tlantis.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&gt;<\/span><\/strong>N\u00e9gris is credited as the first person to discover the sunken city of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/pavlopetri-new\/\">Pavlopetri<\/a> in 1904, which lay unexplored until 1967 when it was rediscovered by <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/flemming-nicholas\/\">Nicholas Flemming<\/a>.<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&lt;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><sup>(a) <\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/books.openedition.org\/editionsmsh\/3425?lang=en\">https:\/\/books.openedition.org\/editionsmsh\/3425?lang=en<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Phocion N\u00e9gris (1846-1928) was born in Athens but was educated in Paris where he spent 21 years.
