Jacques<\/strong> C<\/strong>ollina<\/strong>–<\/strong>G<\/strong>irard (1949- )<\/strong>,<\/strong> from the University of the Mediterranean in Aix-en-Provence, is seeking evidence of Atlantis in the Strait of Gibraltar<\/a>. A study of bathymetric charts of the western strait led to the identification of an underwater feature, known as Spartel Island<\/a>, as a potential candidate for the \"collina-girard\"<\/a>location of Atlantis.\u00a0 Spartel is one island in an archipelago that would have been exposed during the last Ice Age<\/a>. Critics of his theory have pointed out that the small size of Spartel is in sharp contrast with the description given by Plato. Collina-Girard admits to this weakness in his theory and offers some possible explanations(<\/sup>a<\/sup>)<\/sup> – “the geological data do not fit this large size of Atlantis Island; the magnifying effect of 9,000 years verbal tradition and lack of real efficient medium for measuring distances could explain such a discrepancy; we could also follow Hertmann hypothesis, according to which Critias indications related to Atlantis Island size probably fail, due to a mistake of Critias the Greek in converting Egyptian length unit in Greek units -the size has probably to be divided by 30.”<\/em>(e<\/sup>)<\/sup><\/p>\n

Nevertheless, in the same 2002 paper, he also fails to address the discrepancy between the 9000 BC date for Spartel and the Bronze Age society described by Plato. He stated at the 2005 Atlantis Conference<\/a> on Melos that prehistoric oral traditions could have been transmitted over thousands of years until recorded in writing during the 4th<\/sup> millennium BC by Egyptian scribes [629<\/a>.439]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Collina-Girard has proposed the location of Atlantis in approximately the same area as that suggested by Georgeos Diaz-Montexano<\/a>. <\/strong>Intense rivalry exists between the two men with Diaz-Montexano claiming to have publicly identified the probable site of Plato\u2019s Atlantis a year earlier than Collina-Girard. In 2009, Collina-Girard had his ideas published in book form[0999<\/a><\/sup>]<\/sup>. This has now been critically reviewed by Heinz-Guenther Nesselrath<\/a>(c)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Marc-Andr\u00e9 Gutcher<\/a> a geophysicist at the University of Western Brittany had initially supported Collina-Girard\u2019s theory but later retracted(d)<\/sup> having concluded that Spartel Island, when above sea level during the last Ice Age, was probably only inhabited by a few fishermen and that it was not home to the Bronze Age<\/a> society described by Plato.<\/p>\n

Rainer W. K\u00fchne<\/a>, who favours a location on mainland Spain, has also argued against the idea of Spartel Island as Atlantis(<\/sup>b<\/sup>)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n
