It has a population of over 40,000 and is administered by the Republic of Yemen. In ancient times it was known as the <em>Dioscorides<\/em> or \u2018Isle of the Dioscuri\u2019 (Castor and Pollux).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/socotra_2-e3ca7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-28010\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/socotra_2-e3ca7-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"socotra_2-e3ca7\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/socotra_2-e3ca7-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/socotra_2-e3ca7.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Our interest in Socotra stems from the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hebert-jacques\/\">Jacques H\u00e9bert<\/a>, a former French police chief identified the island as the location of Atlantis<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/h-j\/\">373<\/a>]<\/sup>. He also claims that the strait of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/bab-el-mandeb\/\">Bab el Mandeb<\/a> situated to the north was the site of the Pillars of Heracles.<\/p>\n<p>On Christmas Eve, 2010 the Yemen news agency reported<sup>(a)<\/sup> that a Russian team of archaeologists had discovered an ancient city on Socotra, the main island of the group.
