He was a noted astronomer<sup>(a<\/sup><sup>) <\/sup> who was director of the Algiers Observatory. In 1950, an asteroid, 1616 Filipoff, was named in his honour.<\/p>\n<p>Around 1930, he presented a report to the French Academy of Sciences in which he claimed to have astronomically calculated the exact date of the demise of Atlantis in the Atlantic as 7256 BC<sup>(b)<\/sup>. He also maintained that <em>&#8220;both the Egyptian and Mexican traditions agree in stating that the island disappeared when the sun was in Cancer.&#8221;<\/em><sup>(c) <\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Little else is heard of Monsieur Filipoff until a brief mention in <em>The Queensland Times <\/em>(9 February 1939, p.5) and a later reference in <a href=\"#WilkinsHT\">Harold T.
