He turned to mythology as means of unravelling some of the world\u2019s historical mysteries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Italian geologist Luigi Piccardi along with Masse were co-editors of <em>Myth and Geology<\/em><sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/n-r\/\">1541<\/a>]\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>where it was noted that <em>&#8220;Myths are largely event-based, in that they are triggered to a large part by an event, or combination of events, that catastrophically impact society, then these myths provide a window upon those events that can be recovered, retrieved and even dated.&#8221;<\/em><sup>(b)<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The publication of <em>Myth and Geology <\/em>gave a boost to the development of the new discipline of &#8216;<a href=\"#Geomythology\">geomythology<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In particular, Masse studied 175 flood myths among which two gave clues to a major event that occurred in 2807 BC, which Masse linked to a cometary impact south of Madagascar creating the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/burckle-crater\/\">Burckle Crater<\/a> and producing a 600-foot tsunami that swept around the world<sup>(a)<\/sup>. Masse implied a connection with the destruction of Atlantis when he co-authored a paper that was presented to the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/atlantis-conference-%e2%80%93-melos-2005\/\">2005 Atlantis Conference<\/a><sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/m\/\">0629<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0on the Burckle Crater.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, many biblical fundamentalists have adopted the Burckle theory as the most likely cause of Noah&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/deluge\/\">Deluge<\/a>, although Masse, as far as I can determine, has not endorsed such a linkage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Masse is a leading member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/holocene-impact-working-group\/\">Holocene Impact Working Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><sup>(a)<\/sup>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sott.net\/article\/144125-Did-a-Comet-Cause-the-Great-Flood\">https:\/\/www.sott.net\/article\/144125-Did-a-Comet-Cause-the-Great-Flood<\/a><\/p>\n<p><sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(b)<\/span><\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220325042347\/https:\/\/sp.lyellcollection.org\/content\/273\/1\">Table of Contents \u2014 January 01, 2007, 273 (1) | Geological Society, London, Special Publications (archive.org)<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>William Bruce Masse (1948- )\u00a0is an environmental archaeologist with the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
