He lived and worked in Egypt for a number of years until he retired from the German Institute for Ancient Egyptian Archaeology in Cairo.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years there have been claims that the bust was a fake<sup>(c)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">In the mid-1920s he became interested in the search for Atlantis. At a conference in Paris in 1926 he suggested <a title=\"chott el jerid\" href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/chott-el-jerid\/\">Chott el-Jerid<\/a> as the most likely location for Plato\u2019s lost city, which was inundated around 1250 BC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">The source for\u00a0the above reference to Atlantis<sup>(a)<\/sup> seems to be\u00a0incorrect and may be the result of confusion with <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/borchardt-dr-paul\/\"><strong>Paul<\/strong> Borchardt<\/a>.
