M. Ewing\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/W.-M.-Ewing.jpg 240w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/W.-M.-Ewing-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>oceanographers of the 20th century. His work on behalf of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in the late 1940s and early 1950s, exploring the North Atlantic, inadvertently gave an impetus to the theory of Atlantis being located in the Atlantic. His discovery of sandy \u2018beaches\u2019 at a depth of two miles and rocks normally associated with the continental crust, sial, led to speculation that this was evidence of a large sunken landmass<sup>(b)<\/sup>.
