The archipelago includes the tiny independent Principality of Pontinha<sup>(a)<\/sup>, which today has bitcoin as its official currency.<\/p>\n<p>The French philosopher, Voltaire, seems to have been somewhat sceptical about the existence of Atlantis, remarking in his <em>Essai sur le moeurs <\/em><sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/t-v\/\">1504<\/a>] <\/sup> that<em>\u201c if it were true that such a part of the world ever existed. Most likely it was none other than the island of <\/em><em>Madeira<\/em><em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/donnelly-ignatius-loyola\/\">Ignatius Donnelly<\/a>\u00a0proposed it as\u00a0one possible location for Atlantis. This followed soundings taken in the area at the end of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, which suggested that there existed a submerged <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/map-madeira.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-27128\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/map-madeira-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"map-madeira\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/map-madeira-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/map-madeira.jpg 581w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>ridge linking the islands with the European mainland.\u00a0Madeira is frequently linked with the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/azores\/\">Azores<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/canary-islands\/\">Canaries<\/a>\u00a0as visible remains of Atlantis.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1920s <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/bjorkman-edwin\/\">Edwin Bjorkman<\/a> noted <sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/b\/\">0181<\/a>.68]<\/sup>\u00a0that many of his peers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hennig-richard\/\">Richard Hennig<\/a><sup>(d)<\/sup>, considered Madeira to have been Homer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/ogygia\/\">Ogygia,<\/a> itself frequently associated with Atlantis.<\/p>\n<p>By way of balance, I must include reasons offered by <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/stelios-grant-pavlou\/\">Stelios Pavlou<\/a> for not identifying the Madeiras as one the remnants of Atlantis<\/p>\n<p>1.) There is no evidence that this\u00a0archipelago\u00a0was once a larger island.<\/p>\n<p>2.) There is no evidence it was ever connected to the Canary Islands or the Azores.<\/p>\n<p>3.) There are no traces of a megalithic civilization there<sup>(f)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Atlantisforschung has published a short list of other commentators who have considered the Madeiras as possible remnants of Atlantis,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/dalbertis-alberto-enrico\/\">Enrico Alberto d&#8217;Albe<\/a>rtis (1846-1932)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/mille-pierre-n\/\">Pierre Mille\u00a0<\/a>(1864-1941)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/pereira-de-sousa-francisco-luis-n\/\">Francisco Luis Pereira de Sousa<\/a>(1870-1931)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/almeida-joao-de-n\/\">Jo\u00e3o de Almeida\u00a0<\/a>(1873-1953)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/braghine-col-alexander-pavlovitch\/\">Alexander Braghine<\/a>(1878-1942)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/lamas-maria-n\/\">Maria Lamas\u00a0<\/a>(1893-1985)<sup>(e)<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/collins-andrew\/\">Andrew Collins<\/a> in <em>Gateway to Atlantis<\/em> <sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/c\/\">072<\/a>.80]<\/sup> refers to a work by Pseudo-Aristotle, <em>On Marvellous Things Heard<\/em>, in which the author describes a prosperous island with navigable rivers, outside the Pillars of Heracles. There are no rivers on Madeira, a fact that has not gone unnoticed. <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/gordon-cyrus-h\/\">Cyrus H. Gordon<\/a> wrote that <em>&#8216;west of Africa there are no navigable rivers until Haiti, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/cuba\/\"><em>Cuba<\/em><\/a><em> and the American mainland&#8217;<\/em>. Cuba being Collins&#8217; preferred Atlantis location, such comments tenuously supported his claim and also ruled out Madeira.<\/p>\n<p>Some commentators such as <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/pillot-gilbert\/\">Gilbert Pillot<\/a><sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/n-r\/\">742<\/a>.46] <\/sup>have remarked on the similarity of Madeira to the island of Aeolia described in Homer\u2019s <em>Odyssey.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of YouTube clips<sup>(a)(b)<\/sup> purporting to show the remains of Atlantis on Madeira. In fact, all they show are ruins, subjectively identified as Atlantis.
