The Bretons <\/strong>are a cultural grouping located in Brittany<\/a> in northwest France, where the most outstanding megalithic monuments of Europe are situated.\u00a0Today, the Bretons consider themselves a separate Celtic \"\"<\/a>people, with a strong nationalist movement(c)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

It was in 1839, that the Rev. Algernon Herbert (1792-1855), Dean of Merton College, Oxford, was the first to use the term \u2018megalithic\u2019 in a paper describing the monuments of England and Brittany.<\/p>\n

Since the middle of the 19th<\/sup> century a number of commentators right up to the present, have labelled the Bretons as Atlantean. <\/b>These include the late R. Cedric Leonard<\/a>(a)<\/sup>, who In support of this idea cited both Stephen Oppenheimer<\/a> and Herodotus<\/a>, although he did have some reservations. Hank Harrison<\/a> wrote Finding Atlantis <\/em>in which, he supported the idea of a megalithic Atlantis, with its centre of power probably located in the Morbihan<\/a> area of Brittany.<\/p>\n

In the 19th century, Ignatius Donnelly <\/a>quoted Eugene Bodichon <\/a>as expressing a similar view[021<\/a>.389]<\/sup>. Bodichon\u2019s opinion is simply based on the temperament and physical similarities between the Bretons and the Berbers <\/a>of North Africa. Similarly, Gerry Forster <\/a>refers to Bodichon\u2019s opinion in his The Lost Continent Rediscovered<\/em>(b)<\/sup>. I do not think that the case is proven, even if the legendary kingdom of Ys<\/a>, reputedly off the Brittany coast, is brought into the debate.<\/p>\n
