{"id":18681,"date":"2012-11-06T08:07:24","date_gmt":"2012-11-06T08:07:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/?p=18681"},"modified":"2026-01-08T15:55:41","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T15:55:41","slug":"bretons-n","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/bretons-n\/","title":{"rendered":"Bretons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Bretons <\/strong>are a cultural grouping located in <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/brittany\/\">Brittany<\/a> in northwest France, where the most outstanding megalithic monuments of Europe are situated.\u00a0Today, the Bretons consider themselves a separate Celtic <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Brittany.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-37658\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Brittany-300x296.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a>people, with a strong nationalist movement<sup>(c)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>It was in 1839, that the Rev. Algernon Herbert (1792-1855), Dean of Merton College, Oxford, was the first to use the term \u2018megalithic\u2019 in a paper describing the monuments of England and Brittany.<\/p>\n<p>Since the middle of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century a number of commentators right up to the present, have labelled the Bretons as Atlantean.<b> <\/b>These include the late <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/leonard-r-cedric\/\">R. Cedric Leonard<\/a><sup>(a)<\/sup>, who In support of this idea cited both <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/oppenheimer-stephen\/\">Stephen Oppenheimer<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/herodotus-revised\/\">Herodotus<\/a>, although he did have some reservations. <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/harrison-hank\/\">Hank Harrison<\/a> wrote <em>Finding Atlantis <\/em>in which, he supported the idea of a megalithic Atlantis, with its centre of power probably located in the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/morbihan\/\">Morbihan<\/a> area of Brittany.<\/p>\n<p>In the 19th century,<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/donnelly-ignatius-loyola\/\"> Ignatius Donnelly <\/a>quoted <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/bodichon-dr-eugene\/\">Eugene Bodichon <\/a>as expressing a similar view<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/d\/\">021<\/a>.389]<\/sup>. Bodichon\u2019s opinion is simply based on the temperament and physical similarities between the Bretons and the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/berbers\/\">Berbers <\/a>of North Africa. Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/gerry-forster-n\/\">Gerry Forster <\/a>refers to Bodichon\u2019s opinion in his <em>The Lost Continent Rediscovered<\/em><sup>(b)<\/sup>.
