Gregorio Garc\u00eda (1556\/61-1627) <\/strong>was a Spanish Dominican who worked in Peru for some years and in 1607 published Origen de los indios del Nuevo mundo e Indias occidentals<\/em>[1400<\/a>]<\/sup>,\u00a0 <\/em>in which he reviewed all the then current theories regarding the origins of native Americans.<\/p>\n

Ronald Fritze notes in his Invented Knowledge<\/em>[<\/sup>0709<\/a>]<\/sup> that Garcia included the possibility that either America was Atlantis or the home of refugees from there. Andr\u00e9s Gonz\u00e1les de Barcia (1673-1743), another Spanish historian, published an expanded edition of Garc\u00eda\u2019s book in 1729.<\/p>\n

Franke’s <\/a>comments on Garcia “In 1607, he published his work Origen de los indios de el nuevo mundo, e Indias Occidentales, in which he argues in great detail that\u00a0<\/em>America\u00a0was a part of\u00a0Atlantis. The starting point is the\u00a0critique of Jos\u00e9 de Acosta\u00a0from 1590, who doubted the reality of\u00a0Plato’s\u00a0Atlantis. Point by point, Garc\u00eda formulates in seven chapters on almost 50 pages his reasons why he considers this criticism to be unfounded, and unfolds an Atlantis hypothesis that is surprisingly detailed for this time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
