He is reported to have favoured America as Atlantis. Little else is known about him. One of only nine known copies of the atlas was stolen a few years ago but was recovered and returned to its rightful owner, the Royal Library of Sweden<sup>(a)<\/sup>. However, the theft did have a tragic ending for the thief<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(b)<\/span><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia notes(<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(c)<\/span><\/sup> that Wytfliet wrote concerning the <em>Terra Australis<\/em>\u00a0in his 1597 book,\u00a0<em>Descriptionis Ptolemaicae Augmentum<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The terra Australis is, therefore, the southernmost of all other lands, directly beneath the antarctic circle; extending beyond the tropic of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Wytfliet_South_1597.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-55849 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Wytfliet_South_1597-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Wytfliet_South_1597-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Wytfliet_South_1597-1024x822.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Wytfliet_South_1597-768x617.jpg 768w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Wytfliet_South_1597.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Capricorn to the West, it ends almost at the equator itself, and separated by a narrow strait lies on the East opposite to New Guinea, only known so far by a few shores because after one voyage and another that route has been given up and unless sailors are forced and driven by stress of winds it is seldom visited.
