He was a geologist by profession and is well known for his 1914 study of the devastating Lisbon earthquake of 1755. He speculated<sup>(a)<\/sup> that this tragic event might have been the last \u2018gasp\u2019 of a sunken Atlantis. He\u00a0also suggested that Atlantis had\u00a0originally occupied most of the Atlantic, linking Africa, Europe and America.
