Both can be clearly seen on his map\u00a0using the link below<sup>(a)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1596 Ortelius was struck by the possibility that America, Europe and Africa had at one time been joined together but had over time become separated, an idea expressed in his <em>Thesaurus Geographicus<\/em><sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">[<\/span><\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/n-r\/\"><sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">1225<\/span><\/sup><\/a><sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">]<\/span><\/sup><em>. <\/em>Ortelius also included a speculative southern landmass, Terra Australis, which he designated as a &#8220;land of parrots&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In 1597, Ortelius was the first to map<sup>(d) <\/sup> the travels of Homer\u2019s Odysseus, notably locating <strong><em>all<\/em><\/strong> his adventures in the Central and Eastern Mediterranean, which was probably just a reflection of the limits of Greek maritime knowledge at the time that the narrative originated!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ortelius-map-odysseus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-41394\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ortelius-map-odysseus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"616\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ortelius-map-odysseus.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ortelius-map-odysseus-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ortelius-map-odysseus-768x473.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ortelius suggested that Atlantis had been located in North America but that they had separated\u00a0in the very distant past! Before modern theories of Continental Drift and its successor, <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/plate-tectonics\/\">Plate Tectonics<\/a>, the idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/landbridges-n\/\">landbridges<\/a> between continents was popular as an explanation for the spread of animals and people around the world. Some suggested as an alternative, the existence of lost continents such as Atlantis in the Atlantic, which acted as a stepping-stone between the continents<sup>(c)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Four hundred years later <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wegener-alfred\/\">Alfred Wegener<\/a> incorporated some of Ortelius&#8217; ideas into his theory of\u00a0Continental Drift, which later led to the current theory of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/plate-tectonics\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Plate Tectonics<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A purpose-built polar exploration ship, m.v.
