P<\/strong>haeacia<\/strong> was a land described by Homer<\/a> in his epic poem O<\/em>dyssey<\/em>, <\/em><\/strong>which is usually equated with\u00a0the legendary island of Scheria<\/a>, identified by many with Atlantis. .<\/p>\n

Ignatius Donnelly\u00a0was probably the first to suggest a linkage between Phaeacia and Atlantis. J\u00fcrgen Spanuth <\/a>as well as Hennig<\/a> and Kluge<\/a>\u00a0shared this view\u00a0of Donnelly<\/a>‘s,\u00a0 Based on Hennig’s work Spanuth listed 32 items of similarity between Phaeacia and Atlantis in his Atlantis \u2013 The Mystery Unravelled<\/em>[017<\/a>.143]\u00a0<\/sup>and Atlantis of the North[<\/span>015<\/a>.218]<\/span><\/sup>. <\/span><\/span>However,\u00a0 N. Zhirov <\/a>remarked that an equally long list of discrepancies could also be compiled, leaving the question still open.<\/p>\n

There is something of a consensus among scholars that Phaeacia is a reference to the Greek island of Corfu. However, Hennig did not accept that Scheria could be identified with the Adriatic island, instead, he suggested that it was beside Spain.<\/p>\n

An Atlantic location for Homer’s epic poems is advocated by N.R. De Graaf(d)<\/sup>, the Dutch author of the Homeros Explorations<\/em> website(c)<\/sup>. Specifically, he concluded that Scheria can be identified with Lanzarote in the Canaries<\/a> concurring with Iman Wilkens<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Armin Wolf who has studied extensively the geography of Homer’s Odyssey <\/em> concluded a paper(b)<\/sup> on the subject as follows – “Scheria, the country of\u00a0<\/em>the Phaeacians, this ideal land described by Homer, was no\u00a0<\/em>fantasy, but nothing else but Greater Greece, <\/em>Magna Graecia<\/em><\/a>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

However, Felice Vinci<\/a>, has strongly set Phaeacia in the geographical context of Norway [019<\/a>.21-4]<\/sup>\u00a0and offers a number of similarities between the Vikings and the Phaeacians. Kalju Pattustaja agrees with this identification of the Phaeacians(e)<\/sup> and cites Andres P\u00e4\u00e4bo as being of a similar view. However, it should be noted that P\u00e4\u00e4bo is highly critical of much of Vinci’s work(f)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Roger Coghill<\/a> is a more recent supporter of Scheria being another name for Atlantis, which he locates near Faro<\/a> in Portugal.<\/a>(g)<\/sup> His views have been contrasted in the media(a)<\/sup> with those of Peter Daughtrey<\/a>, who locates Atlantis not too far away in Silves.<\/p>\n
