{"id":2158,"date":"2010-05-30T16:48:54","date_gmt":"2010-05-30T16:48:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/phaeacia\/"},"modified":"2025-10-18T07:20:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-18T06:20:17","slug":"phaeacia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/phaeacia\/","title":{"rendered":"Phaeacia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>P<\/strong><strong>haeacia<\/strong> was a land described by <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/homer\/\">Homer<\/a> in his epic poem <em>O<\/em><em>dyssey<\/em><strong><em>, <\/em><\/strong>which is usually equated with\u00a0the legendary island of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/scheria\/\">Scheria<\/a>, identified by many with Atlantis. .<\/p>\n<p>Ignatius Donnelly\u00a0was probably the first to suggest a linkage between Phaeacia and Atlantis. <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/spanuth-dr-jurgen\/\">J\u00fcrgen Spanuth <\/a>as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hennig-richard\/\">Hennig<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/kluge-friedrich-n\/\">Kluge<\/a>\u00a0shared this view\u00a0of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/donnelly-ignatius-loyola\/\">Donnelly<\/a>&#8216;s,\u00a0 Based on Hennig&#8217;s work Spanuth listed 32 items of similarity between Phaeacia and Atlantis in his <em>Atlantis \u2013 The Mystery Unravelled<\/em><sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/s\/\">017<\/a>.143]\u00a0<\/sup>and Atlantis of the North<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/s\/\">015<\/a>.<span style=\"color: #000000;\">218]<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. <\/span><\/span>However,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/zhirov-nicolai-feodosyevich\/\">N. Zhirov <\/a>remarked that an equally long list of discrepancies could also be compiled, leaving the question still open.<\/p>\n<p>There is something of a consensus among scholars that Phaeacia is a reference to the Greek island of Corfu. However, Hennig did not accept that Scheria could be identified with the Adriatic island, instead, he suggested that it was beside Spain.<\/p>\n<p>An Atlantic location for Homer&#8217;s epic poems is advocated by N.R. De Graaf<sup>(d)<\/sup>, the Dutch author of the <em>Homeros Explorations<\/em> website<sup>(c)<\/sup>. Specifically, he concluded that Scheria can be identified with Lanzarote in the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/canary-islands\/\">Canaries<\/a> concurring with<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wilkens-iman-jacob\/\"> Iman Wilkens<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Armin Wolf who has studied extensively the geography of Homer&#8217;s <em>Odyssey <\/em> concluded a paper<sup>(b)<\/sup> on the subject as follows &#8211; &#8220;<em>Scheria, the country of\u00a0<\/em><em>the Phaeacians, this ideal land described by Homer, was no\u00a0<\/em><em>fantasy, but nothing else but Greater Greece, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/magna-graecia-n\/\"><em>Magna Graecia<\/em><\/a><em>.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/vinci-felice\/\">Felice Vinci<\/a>, has strongly set Phaeacia in the geographical context of Norway <sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/t-v\/\">019<\/a>.21-4]<\/sup>\u00a0and offers a number of similarities between the Vikings and the Phaeacians. Kalju Pattustaja agrees with this identification of the Phaeacians<sup>(e)<\/sup> and cites Andres P\u00e4\u00e4bo as being of a similar view.
