{"id":2223,"date":"2010-05-31T08:51:45","date_gmt":"2010-05-31T08:51:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/holocene-epoch\/"},"modified":"2026-03-14T18:01:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T18:01:13","slug":"holocene-epoch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/holocene-epoch\/","title":{"rendered":"Holocene Epoch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The<\/strong><strong> H<\/strong><strong>olocene<\/strong><strong> E<\/strong><strong>poch<\/strong> is the formal title given to the geological period that follows the Pleistocene, or in other words it is the name <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Mithen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-27487\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Mithen.jpg\" alt=\"Mithen\" width=\"180\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a>given to approximately the last 12,000 years of Earth\u2019s history. This coincides with the period since the end of the last Ice Age and would just about include the time of Plato\u2019s Atlantis, if we accept the 9,000 years referred to by him at face value.<\/p>\n<p>Steven Mithen, professor of early prehistory at the University of Reading, has provided<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/m\/\"><sup>390<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup> us with a worthwhile global overview of man\u2019s development during the earlier part of the Holocene.<\/p>\n<p>Mithen has also been involved in important excavations at Jordan\u2019s Wadi Faynan, where he and his colleagues uncovered very early complex structures, after which along with evidence from other sites suggest that the earliest permanent buildings functioned as community centres rather than habitations<sup>(a)<\/sup>. <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/stonehenge-new\/\">Stonehenge<\/a> might fit this perception!<\/p>\n<p>Anthropogene is another name given to man\u2019s history during the Holocene since this is the time during which human activity has significantly altered the natural environment.<\/p>\n<p><sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(a)<\/span><\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantisonline.smfforfree2.com\/index.php?topic=28116.0;wap2\">https:\/\/atlantisonline.smfforfree2.com\/index.php?topic=28116.0;wap2<\/a> (also see <em>New Scientist <\/em>5\/10\/13)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Holocene Epoch is the formal title given to the geological period that follows the Pleistocene, or in other words it is the name given to approximately the last 12,000 years of Earth\u2019s history.
