The entire site covers 170 acres and according to <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/joseph-frank\/\">Frank Joseph<\/a> is comprised of an estimated 250 million tons of basalt!<sup>(b)<\/sup> An article on the Smithsonian website offers very different figures<sup>(c)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The city <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Nan_Madol.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-22750\" style=\"border: 4px solid black;\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Nan_Madol-300x272.png\" alt=\"Nan_Madol\" width=\"400\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Nan_Madol-300x272.png 300w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Nan_Madol.png 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>has a series of canals connecting the structures, which were built on nearly a hundred artificial islands. It has been called both the \u2018Venice\u2019 and the \u2018Atlantis\u2019 of the Pacific. Conventional archaeology dates the site to around 1200 AD. However, a study published in 2022 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)<sup>(h)<\/sup>.suggests that <em>&#8220;<\/em><em>it is unlikely Nan Madol was built with<\/em> <em>canals and islands in mind. Rather, the canals and islets are a result of sea-level rise over nearly 1,000 years. <\/em><em>Much like island nations today, large stone walls may have been constructed to protect the site from waves that were slowly encroaching higher and higher.&#8221;<\/em> <sup>(g)<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/churchward-colonel-james\/\">James Churchward<\/a> claimed Nan Madol as part of his concocted <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/mu\/\">Mu<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/childress-david-hatcher\/\">David<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<\/span>Hatcher Childress<\/a><a href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Tony\/Documents\/Atlantipedia.18.11.13\/TEXT%20with%20Links%2020.11.13.docx#ChildressDavidH\"> h<\/a>as proposed that the site was part of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/lemuria\/\">Lemuria<\/a>, another invention. <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/daniken-erich-von\/\">Erich von D\u00e4niken<\/a> in his <i>The Gold of the Gods <\/i>was happy to claim that as a result of extraterrestrial intervention, the ancient Micronesians,\u00a0had mastered flight and used this ability to transport the stone for the construction of the city!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1979, Bill S. Ballinger published <em>Lost City of Stone<\/em> <sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/b\/\">1920<\/a>]<\/sup><em>, <\/em>following the author&#8217;s visit to the island a few years earlier. In common with other commentators, he could not offer any credible explanation as to the identity of the site&#8217;s builders or its purpose.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Recent archaeological research in 2017,\u00a0led by Mark McCoy from Texas Southern Methodist University, has, not unexpectedly, regenerated foolish speculation that the remarkable site might in some way be connected with Plato&#8217;s Atlantis<sup>(a)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/24117\/\">Heinrich Kruparz<\/a>, the Austrian author of <em>Atlantis und Lemuria<\/em> <sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/k-l\/\">990<\/a>]<\/sup> has also penned a paper (in English) on the mysterious megaliths of Nan Madol<sup>(d)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another site offers a series of interesting images from Nan Madol<sup>(e)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The megalithic site of Pohnpaid is less than four miles from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nan Madol, and is the subject of a book by Carole Nervig, <em>The Petroglyphs of MU <\/em><strong><sup>[<\/sup><\/strong><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/n-r\/\">2087<\/a>]<\/sup>. She featured as <em>Author of the Month <\/em>on <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hancock-graham\/\">Graham Hancock<\/a>&#8216;s website for December 2022<sup>(f)<\/sup>.
