They were also known as Pleiades or <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hesperides\/\">Hesperides<\/a>, after their mother Hesperis. As the Hesperides they were considered the protectors of the Seven <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/isles-of-the-blest\/\">Isles of the Blest<\/a>, which contained the Gardens of Atlas, their father. The Garden of the Hesperides was located, according to Eustatius, in <em>the field of Atlas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Hercules had to locate \u2018the golden apples\u2019 in the Garden of the Hesperides.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/bergman-jonas\/\">Jonas Bergman<\/a> has identified the \u2018golden apples\u2019 as the oranges of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/morocco-revised\/\">Morocco<\/a>, with a site near <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/lixus\/\">Lixus<\/a> providing the Garden of the Hesperides. The late Michael H\u00fcbner, who was also an advocate for a Moroccan site for Atlantis, proposed that the fruit of the Argan tree found in the Souss-Massa region was the &#8216;golden apples.<\/p>\n<p>If these interpretations are correct, it implies that Hercules was familiar with apples but not oranges and hence he must have come from a more northerly climate, which raises a series of other questions not pertinent to this work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Atlantides, in Greek mythology was the collective name given to the seven beautiful daughters of Atlas, the founder of Atlantis.
