{"id":26299,"date":"2015-06-14T08:00:51","date_gmt":"2015-06-14T07:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/?p=26299"},"modified":"2026-01-14T17:47:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T17:47:27","slug":"ceram-c-w-n","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/ceram-c-w-n\/","title":{"rendered":"Ceram, C.W."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Ceram.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26300\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Ceram-241x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ceram\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Ceram-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Ceram.jpg 290w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0C.W.<\/strong><strong> C<\/strong><strong>eram <\/strong><strong>(1915-1972) <\/strong>was the pseudonym of the German journalist, Kurt Wilhelm Marek, who apparently wrote under that <em>nom de plume<\/em> in order to distance himself from his wartime work as a Nazi propagandist working as a member of the Propagandatruppe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1951, Ceram had an article published in <em>The Atlantic<\/em> magazine<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(b)<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0detailing some of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/schliemann-heinrich\/\">Heinrich Schliemann<\/a>&#8216;s adventures while excavating in Greece and Turkey, which he subsequently expanded and included in <em>Gods, Graves and Scholars<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His interest in archaeology led to a number of books on the subject, the best known of which were <em>Gods, Graves and Scholars <\/em><sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/c\/\"><sup>1095<\/sup><\/a><sup>] <\/sup>and <em>The Secret of the Hittites <\/em><sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/c\/\"><sup>1096<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup>.\u00a0A\u00a0contemporary and highly critical review of the former is available online<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(a)<\/span><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ceram, an Atlantis sceptic, &#8216;calculated&#8217; that 20,000 books had been written on the subject. This is nonsensical, but might be half true if all translations Atlantis-specific books together with all published papers, directly related to the subject, are counted as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/michael-shermer-new\/\">Michael Shermer<\/a> noted<sup>(c<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup> that in 1989, Pierre Jarnac estimated that at the time there were &#8216;5,000 book titles about Atlantis&#8217;. This is just more nonsense and probably includes the huge number of fictional books with &#8216;Atlantis&#8217; in the title. The total of Atlantis-specific books probably numbers in the hundreds, with many more just touching on the subject <em>en passant<\/em>.
