{"id":2694,"date":"2010-06-03T13:40:14","date_gmt":"2010-06-03T13:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/australia\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T07:13:41","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T07:13:41","slug":"australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A<\/strong><strong>ustralia<\/strong> has not been totally ignored in the search for Atlantis<strong>. <\/strong>\u00a0As early as 1852, an Australian newspaper claimed<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(b<\/span><\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>, obviously tongue-in-cheek, that Australia was Atlantis, as they were both spelt with a capital &#8216;A&#8217; and both had gold!<\/p>\n<p>Rex Gilroy is a maverick researcher from \u2018Down Under\u2019 who has published a book<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">[<\/span><\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/g\/\"><sup>598<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup> that bravely claims an antipodean location for Atlantis. <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/rex-gilroy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-27819\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/rex-gilroy-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"rex gilroy\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/rex-gilroy-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/rex-gilroy.jpg 355w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gilroy has been working on the &#8216;unexplained&#8217; in his home country for over fifty years and has written several books on &#8216;mysterious&#8217; Australia. He has claimed evidence for Egyptian and Phoenician connections with Australia. He has also named the ancient megalith-building civilisation of Australia, &#8216;Uru&#8217;<sup>(d)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>His most recent exploit is to mount a search in the Urewera Ranges of New Zealand for the \u2018extinct\u2019 Moa.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Paul White, among others has claimed that Egyptians reached Australia<sup>(i)<\/sup> offering photo evidence<sup>(j)<\/sup>. These appear to be images of the Gosford Glyphs, also known as Kariong Hieroglyphs, in New South Wales and although they have long been identified as fakes<sup>(k)<\/sup>, from time to time, attention-seeking &#8216;researchers&#8217; try to revive interest in them.<\/p>\n<p>A completely different link between Australia and Atlantis was suggested by a Russian writer, <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/bashinsky-s\/\">S. Bashinsky<\/a>, in 1914, when he claimed that Australia had been created as a result of an impact with an asteroid that split a pre-existing landmass, part of which moved eastward to become Atlantis\/America. The idea was so totally at variance with geological realities that it got no support.<\/p>\n<p>An anonymous writer on an Internet message board also supports an Australian Atlantis concept referring to a book, <em>Ayer\u2019s Rock: Its People, Their Beliefs and Their Art<\/em><sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/m\/\"><sup>133<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup>; allegedly banned by the Australian government, by Charles P.
