{"id":28630,"date":"2015-10-15T09:09:21","date_gmt":"2015-10-15T08:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/?p=28630"},"modified":"2025-12-12T16:17:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T16:17:12","slug":"balearics-islands-n","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/balearics-islands-n\/","title":{"rendered":"Balearic Islands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Balearic Islands<\/strong> in the Western Mediterraneanis described by Britannica as consisting of two groups of islands. <em>&#8220;The eastern and larger group forms the Balearics proper and includes the principal islands of\u00a0Majorca\u00a0(Mallorca) and\u00a0Minorca\u00a0(Menorca) and the small island of\u00a0Cabrera. The western group is known as the\u00a0Pitiusas and includes the islands of\u00a0Ibiza\u00a0(Eivissa) and\u00a0Formentera.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The archipelago was not occupied until <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Balearics.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-28631\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Balearics.png\" alt=\"Balearics\" width=\"216\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Balearics.png 216w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Balearics-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a>around 2200 BC. Although the two larger islands of Majorca and Minorca have many megalithic monuments, principally <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/taulas-n\/\">taulas<\/a> and talayots, they have not, so far, been part of any serious Atlantis location theory. The only mention that I can find is the unsubstantiated claim by <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/joseph-frank\/\">Frank Joseph <\/a><sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/h-j\/\"><sup>104<\/sup><\/a><sup>.66]<\/sup> that the early settlers were invaders from Atlantis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A February 2023 BBC article noted that\u00a0<em>&#8220;<\/em><em>Menorca has one of the highest concentrations of prehistoric sites in the world (a selection of which are being considered for inclusion in Unesco\u2019s World Heritage list in 2023).<\/em>\u00a0<em>If the island is granted World Heritage status this year, it will unlock more funding for much-needed research that may help answer some of the mysteries of the taulas. It would also be a boon for cultural tourism, encouraging new visitors to explore this beautiful island with its unique archaeological heritage.\u201d<\/em> <sup>(h)<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/sora-steven\/\">Steven Sora<\/a> noted<sup>(d) <\/sup> that <em>&#8220;<\/em><em>From the Bible we know the Tartessians were ruled by kings and mentioned with princes of the isles\u2014very likely islands like Corsica and the Balearics.&#8221; <\/em>I mention this as <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/tartessos\/\">Tartessos <\/a>is frequently linked with Atlantis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The island of Es Vedra off the west coast of Ibiza, the third largest of the Balearics, has had a number of imaginative myths, old and new, associated with it, including that it is supposed to be the birthplace of the goddess <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/neith\/\">Tanit<\/a> and the limestone on the island is alleged to have been used to build the Egyptian Pyramids. Then, for good measure, Es Vedra is also claimed to be a peak of the mountains of Atlantis!<sup>(c) <\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1911, <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/gruhn-albert-n\/\">Albert Gruhn<\/a> proposed that Atlantis may have lain between the Balearics and <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/sardinia-amended\/\">Sardinia<\/a><sup>(a)<\/sup>, while a century later the American nuclear engineer, <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/tuttle-robert-j-n\/\">Robert J. Tuttle<\/a>, suggested<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/t-v\/\">1148<\/a>.301]\u00a0<\/sup> the Balearics as a possible location when sea levels were lower and the archipelago was more extensive, explaining that <em>&#8220;For Atlantis, we must relocate the &#8216;Pillars of Herakles&#8217; to somewhere between Tunisia (the Roman &#8216;Africa&#8217;), Sicily and the toe of Italy.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/kramer-andre-n\/\">Andr\u00e9 Kramer<\/a> published an illustrated paper<sup>(f)<\/sup> on the <em>Mysteria 3000 <\/em>website highlighting the existence of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/14862\/\">cart ruts<\/a> on Mallorca, the principal island of the Balearic group. Kramer also identified cart ruts in Albstadt in Germany<sup>(g)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/geise-prahl\/\">Gernot L.
