{"id":2895,"date":"2010-06-05T19:15:42","date_gmt":"2010-06-05T19:15:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/brandenstein-wilhelm\/"},"modified":"2025-12-19T10:10:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T10:10:06","slug":"brandenstein-wilhelm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/brandenstein-wilhelm\/","title":{"rendered":"Brandenstein, Wilhelm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/brandenstein001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-27504\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/brandenstein001.jpg\" alt=\"brandenstein001\" width=\"160\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a>Wilhelm<\/strong> <strong>B<\/strong><strong>randenstein<\/strong> <strong>(1898-1967)<\/strong>,\u00a0was a Viennese classical scholar, who wrote a detailed commentary<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/b\/\"><sup>196<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup> on Plato\u2019s Atlantis and thought, <em>\u201cThe theory that Plato simply invented the Egyptian derivation, while at the same time showing an extensive knowledge of sources, and constantly reaffirming that it was all pure truth, cannot be sustained\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He considered the Atlantis story to have been inspired by Minoan <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/crete\/\">Crete<\/a>, although <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/spanuth-dr-jurgen\/\">Spanuth<\/a> claims that Brandenstein wrote to him with the conclusion that the story told to Solon, related to the invasion of the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/sea-peoples\/\">Sea Peoples<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/franke-thorwald-c\/\">Thorwald C. Franke<\/a> published an English translation<sup>(a)<\/sup>\u00a0of his 2006 paper on Brandenstein\u2019s contribution to <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/atlantology\/\">atlantology<\/a>. It is interesting, but not altogether convincing, to read that<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBrandenstein believes that Solon erroneously linked two separate accounts to one: From <a href=\"#Egypt\">Egypt<\/a> he had knowledge on the Sea Peoples wars, from Athens he had traditions on the confrontation of <a href=\"#Crete\">Crete<\/a> and Athens, as they are indeed documented in known myths. With this Brandenstein believed that only a part of the Atlantis tradition came from Egypt.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While Franke\u2019s paper is very welcome. It is to be hoped that a translation of Brandenstein\u2019s entire book will be on offer at some point.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/nesselrath-heinz-gunther-n\/\">Heinz-G\u00fcnter Nesselrath<\/a> published a paper attacking Thorwald C. Franke&#8217;s consistent support for Brandenstein&#8217;s Atlantis theories.
