Scott<\/strong><strong>, Jnr <\/strong>were Associate Professors of Geology and Anthropology respectively, at Buffalo&#8217;s State University of New York. They are the authors of <em>Exploring the Unknown<\/em><sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/c\/\"><sup>0878<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup>, in which they sceptically examine some of the mysteries that have been most popular with the general public. An excerpt from their book is available online<sup>(a)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, Atlantis features in this collection, with a review of some of the best-known theories. However, the authors seemed constrained by Sprague deCamp&#8217;s warning<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/d\/\"><sup>0194<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup> that <em>&#8220;you cannot change all the details of Plato&#8217;s story and still claim to have Plato&#8217;s story.&#8221;<\/em> Consequently, they have accepted Plato&#8217;s very early date for the demise of Atlantis, in spite of the fact that it conflicts with both archaeology and common sense.<\/p>\n<p>The result is that Caseau &amp; Scott concluded that the Atlantis narrative includes a distorted memory of the global flooding that followed the last <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/ice-ages\/\">Ice Age.<\/a>\u00a0However, they ignore the fact that the retreat of the Ice Age glaciers raised <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/sea-level-changes\/\">sea levels<\/a> quite gradually, if erratically, and that Plato&#8217;s account of the inundation of Atlantis describes it taking place over a day and a night as a result of earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p><sup>(a) <\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200925184903\/https:\/\/www.jfk-online.com\/exploring.html\">https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200925184903\/https:\/\/www.jfk-online.com\/exploring.html<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Charles J.
