{"id":3021,"date":"2010-06-06T18:57:51","date_gmt":"2010-06-06T18:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/?p=3021"},"modified":"2026-01-15T17:35:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T17:35:44","slug":"clarke-hyde","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/clarke-hyde\/","title":{"rendered":"Clarke, Hyde"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hyde<\/strong><strong> C<\/strong><strong>larke<\/strong> <strong>(1815-1895)<\/strong> was English philologist, engineer and historian who <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Hyde-Clarke.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-22002\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Hyde-Clarke-234x300.jpg\" alt=\"Hyde Clarke\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Hyde-Clarke-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Hyde-Clarke.jpg 468w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/a>suggested<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/c\/\"><sup>242<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup> in 1885, that \u201cthe head seat of the great king (of Atlantis) was possibly in the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/caribbean-atlantis\/\">Caribbean<\/a> Sea; it may be in St. Domingo (<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hispaniola-amended\/\">Hispaniola<\/a>)\u201d. His book can be read online<sup>(<\/sup><sup>a<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Clarke also held the view that \u2018Atlantis\u2019 was the name of the king rather than the kingdom. Another of his odd suggestions was that the elephants of Atlantis were, in fact, tapirs! He further claimed that Australia had been known in remote antiquity<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>(d)<\/sup><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1874, Clarke delivered a paper to the Royal Anthropological Institute in London, in which he claimed that the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/caucasus-mountains\/\">Caucasus<\/a> had been home to an Egyptian colony<sup>(f<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>. A few decades later, <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/flinders-petrie-wm-m\/\">Flinders Petrie<\/a> suggested that the Egyptians had originated in the Caucasus<sup>(e<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>. Both cannot be right!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/colavito-jason-n\/\">Jason Colavito<\/a> reviewed Clarke\u2019s Atlantis ideas in a June 2014 blog<sup>(b)<\/sup>.
