Edward<\/strong><strong> Fontaine (1814-1884) <\/strong>was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, a politician and the author of <em>How the World was Peopled<\/em><sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/e-f\/\">1277<\/a>]<\/sup> in which he favoured the opinions of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/brasseur-de-bourbourg-charles-etienne\/\">Brasseur de Bourbourg<\/a>, who had identified the land of the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/toltecs-the-n\/\">Toltecs<\/a>, in Central America, as the home of Atlantis, citing a comparison of Plato&#8217;s description of Atlantis with that of the mythical kingdom of Xibalba, similar to Donnelly&#8217;s later suggestion.<\/p>\n<p>Fontaine adds quotations from classical writers as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/humboldt-alexander-freiherr-von\/\">Humboldt<\/a>\u00a0in support of this Toltec\u00a0theory<sup>[p.136-140]<\/sup>.\u00a0However, most of the ideas in the book are now long outdated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rev.
