{"id":3211,"date":"2010-06-07T12:48:38","date_gmt":"2010-06-07T12:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/finaeus-oronteus\/"},"modified":"2026-02-08T10:04:32","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T10:04:32","slug":"finaeus-oronteus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/finaeus-oronteus\/","title":{"rendered":"Finaeus, Oronteus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Oronteus<\/strong><strong> Finaeus<\/strong> <strong>(1494-1555)<\/strong> was a celebrated<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>cartographer\u00a0who produced a map in 1531 which is claimed by some that, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/piri-reis-map\/\">Piri Reis <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Oronteus-Finaeus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-27629\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Oronteus-Finaeus.jpg\" alt=\"Oronteus Finaeus\" width=\"200\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/piri-reis-map\/\">Map<\/a>, it depicts the coast of an ice-free <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/antarctica\/\">Antarctica<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hapgood-charles-hutchins\/\">Charles Hapgood<\/a> rediscovered it in 1959<sup>(<\/sup><sup>a<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup> in the Library of Congress. This idea is then used to support the concept of the existence of a very early civilisation that was capable of sophisticated map-making. It is then just a short step to name this civilisation \u2018Atlantis\u2019. Some, such as the Flem-Aths, went further and actually nominated Antarctica as the home of Atlantis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/argod-robert\/\">Robert Argod<\/a> has used the Oronteus Finaeus Map to support his contention that the Polynesians originated in Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/christine-pellech-new\/\">Christine Pellech<\/a> has an article published on the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/atlantisforschung-de\/\">Atlantisforschung<\/a> website taken from her 2013 book <em>Die Entdeckung von Amerika <\/em><sup>[<a href=\"#A1188\">1188<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0<em> (The Discovery of America)<\/em>, in which she reviews the range of medieval maps displaying geographical details &#8216;unknown&#8217; until centuries later!<sup>(e<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup> Her reference to the Mark McMenamin coins can be ignored as they have since been shown to be forgeries (See: <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/sardinia-amended\/\">Sardinia<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, a contrary view has been expressed by <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/heinrich-paul-v\/\">Paul Heinrich, <\/a>who, commenting on <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hancock-graham\/\">Graham Hancock&#8217;s<\/a> assertion that the map shows an ice-free Antarctica, points out that in the case of West Antarctica, the underlying bedrock is, in the main, hundreds of feet <strong><em>below<\/em><\/strong> sea level and would not show on a real map of the region<sup>(c)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>A more recent website<sup>(<\/sup><sup>b<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>, although not endorsing an Antarctic Atlantis, discusses some of these old maps in very great detail<b> <\/b>and on Graham Hancock&#8217;s website. The site is based on a number of chapters from a work-in-progress, <em>T<\/em><em>he <\/em><em>A<\/em><em>tlantis <\/em><em>M<\/em><em>aps: <\/em><em>T<\/em><em>he <\/em><em>R<\/em><em>ise of <\/em><em>A<\/em><em>tlantis and the <\/em><em>F<\/em><em>all of a <\/em><em>P<\/em><em>aradigm <\/em>by <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/fisher-doug\/\">Doug Fisher<\/a>.
