Plato, the primary source, offers little relevant dateable or debatable evidence to support any particular date, except to suggest it was in the very dim and distant past. This is clearly indicated by Plato&#8217;s reference to a time when <em>&#8220;neither ships nor sailing were as yet in existence&#8221; <\/em>(<em>Critias 113e<\/em>), which is clearly <strong><em>very <\/em><\/strong>far in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest boats discovered so far are just dugout tree trunks, dated to around 10,000 years ago. The oldest evidence of sails being used is found in Egypt circa 3200 BC, which is a credible era in which to place early Atlantis. (See: <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/ancient-seafaring\/\">Ancient Seafaring<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/joseph-frank\/\">Frank Joseph<\/a> speculates, that a fourth millennium BC date is possible<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/h-j\/\"><sup>108<\/sup><\/a><sup>.9]<\/sup>. Plato\u2019s text focuses on the time of the Athenian war, with Atlantis\u00a0 suggesting an unbelievable date of 9,600 BC, which is probably due to some manner of textual corruption.
