McCullough<\/a> as the site of the main city of Atlantis. He\u00a0states on his website<sup>(<\/sup><sup>a<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup> that \u2018new scientific research now suggests that the lost Atlantean capital seaport once existed in Central America near a Guatemalan lake named Izabal\u2019 but fails to source the \u2018new scientific research\u2019. In his book <em>S<\/em><em>pirit<\/em> <em>of<\/em><em> A<\/em><em>tlantis,<\/em> he argues his case, matching Plato\u2019s text with the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/the-topography-of-atlantis\/\">topography<\/a> of the area. McCullough points out that west of the modern capital, Guatemala City, lies <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/atitlan-new\/\">Lake Atitl\u00e1n<\/a> whose name has faint echoes of Atlantis.<\/p>\r\n<p>Lake Izabal has also been identified as the location of Atlantis by <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/rittstieg-joachim\/\">Joachim Rittstieg<\/a> based on his interpretation of the Icelandic <em>Eddas, <\/em>Plato and oral traditions of local Maya.<\/p>\r\n<p>Guatemala was also home to a giant carved head, supposedly nearly 30 feet in height and known principally from a grainy 1950s black &amp; white photo. The features shown in the photo are completely different to those of the Negroid characteristics on the giant <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/olmecs\/\">Olmec<\/a> heads found in neighbouring Mexico. It is claimed that the remains of the Guatemalan head were tracked down by Dr Oscar Rafael Padilla Lara and <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/childress-david-hatcher\/\">David Hatcher Childress<\/a> in the 1980s<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(b<\/span><\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>.
