{"id":3350,"date":"2010-06-08T16:15:17","date_gmt":"2010-06-08T16:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hausmann-axel\/"},"modified":"2026-03-14T10:53:38","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T10:53:38","slug":"hausmann-axel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hausmann-axel\/","title":{"rendered":"Hausmann, Axel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Axel Hausmann (1939-2014)<\/strong> was a German physics professor at the Technical University\u00a0of Aachen.\u00a0 He had <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Hausmann-Axel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-28297\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Hausmann-Axel.jpg\" alt=\"Hausmann Axel\" width=\"118\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>identified a circular underwater feature 20 miles due south of Syracuse in Sicily (36\u00b045\u2019N &amp; 15\u00b018\u2019E) as the possible location of Plato\u2019s city of Atlantis and south of that again existed the plain of Atlantis extending as far as Malta. He contended that Atlantis had an area of influence that stretched from Tunisia to Italy, including Malta and Sicily.\u00a0 He erroneously claimed in a paper presented to the 2005 <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/atlantis-conference-%e2%80%93-melos-2005\/\">Atlantis Conference<\/a> <sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/n-r\/\">629<\/a>.351] <\/sup> to be the first to suggest the Central Mediterranean region as a runner in the Atlantis Stakes<sup>(c)<\/sup>. However, he does appear to be the first scientist to promote the idea of a late breaching of a Gibraltar Dam leading to the inundation of Atlantis.<\/p>\n<p>Hausmann placed the Pillars of Heracles at what was formerly a narrow strait between northeast <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/tunisia\/\">Tunisia<\/a> near what is now\u00a0Cape Bon and an enlarged Sicilian landmass, which incorporated Malta.<\/p>\n<p>He dated the submergence of Atlantis to around<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Hausmann-map.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-35353\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Hausmann-map.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Hausmann-map.png 621w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Hausmann-map-300x206.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a> 3500 BC, based on the assumption that Plato\u2019s \u2018years\u2019 were Egyptian seasons (three per solar year).\u00a0 He perceived the remarkable megalithic temples on Malta &amp; Gozo as the remnants of Atlantis and anticipated similar discoveries on Sicily.<b> <\/b>Hausmann&#8217;s dating of Atlantis is the only major detail in his theory with which I disagree.<\/p>\n<p>In a paper delivered to the 2005 Atlantis Conference on Milos,\u00a0Hausmann speculated that the famous cart-ruts of Malta were irrigation channels<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/h-j\/\">629<\/a>.356]<\/sup>, ignoring the fact that they follow the natural undulations of the landscape, unless he thought that these Maltese Atlanteans found a way to make water flow uphill.<\/p>\n<p>Hausmann has also followed the suggestion of the late <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/richter-ulf\/\">Ulf Richter <\/a>who argued that the linear measurements of Atlantis used the Egyptian <em>khet <\/em>(52m)as the unit of measurement rather than the Greek <em>stade <\/em>(175m).<\/p>\n<p>Hausmann proposed that the survivors of the catastrophe migrated to <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/crete\/\">Crete<\/a>, Egypt and Syria, where they provided the stimulus for the subsequent civilisations of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/egypt\/\">Egypt<\/a>, Minoan Crete and Sumer. He specifically identified the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/phaistos-disk\/\">Phaistos Disk<\/a><sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/h-j\/\"><sup>372<\/sup><\/a><sup>] <\/sup>as possibly having been brought to Crete by Atlantean refugees and also presented a paper on this idea to the 2005 Atlantis Conference<sup>(c)<\/sup>. He has written a number of books, including a second volume more directly related to Atlantis, <em>Atlantis &#8211; Die Versunkene Wiege der Kulturen (Atlantis-The Sunken Cradle of Culture)<\/em><sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/h-j\/\"><sup>371<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Hausmann has written a two-part paper entitled <em>Atlantis war Sizilien (Atlantis is Sicily)<\/em> available on the <em>Atlantisforschung.de<\/em> website<sup>(a)<\/sup><sup>(b)<\/sup>.
