Learn more<\/p>\n<p>Full versionText-only versionView sourceTip: To quickly find your search term on this page, press <strong>Ctrl+F<\/strong> or <strong>?<\/strong><strong>-F<\/strong> (Mac) and use the find bar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atlantis and Exodus<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Atlantis and Halley&#8217;s Comet<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Much has been said about &#8220;Legendary Atlantis&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>the empire that sank beneath the sea<\/p>\n<p>Plato had put it on a circular island somewhere<\/p>\n<p>outside &#8220;the pillars of Hercules&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>in the Atlantic Ocean<\/p>\n<p>but this seems to be because he knew it wasn&#8217;t in the Med<\/p>\n<p>there were no circular islands there&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>others placed it in all sorts of strange places<\/p>\n<p>from North Africa to Antarctica<\/p>\n<p>buried by a sea of sand or a sea of ice<\/p>\n<p>others have pushed it so far back in time<\/p>\n<p>as to be completely untraceable<\/p>\n<p>was there such a place?<\/p>\n<p>and what could it have to do with the Bible?<\/p>\n<p>Much has been said about Halley&#8217;s Comet<\/p>\n<p>as a harbinger of disaster<\/p>\n<p>is has been said that when it shines, empires fall<\/p>\n<p>once again, what can this have to do with the Bible?<\/p>\n<p>Halley&#8217;s comet isn&#8217;t mentioned, is it?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Summer, 1628 B.C., North America<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The California&#8217;s White Mountains&#8217; Bristlecone Pine Trees<\/p>\n<p>already some 1400 years old<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Summer, 1628 B.C., China<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Emperor Chieh<\/p>\n<p>not the most illustrious emperor the Chinese had<\/p>\n<p>he was one of many emperors who did not seem to want to rule<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Summer, 1628 B.C., Mediterranea<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Minoan Empire<\/p>\n<p>they were the powerful rulers of the Mediterranean<\/p>\n<p>ruling from Crete<\/p>\n<p>holding Greece in thrall<\/p>\n<p>and trading with Egypt<\/p>\n<p>the world&#8217;s first naval empire<\/p>\n<p>where every island fortress was moated by the Aegean<\/p>\n<p>there&#8217;s was a magnificent civilization<\/p>\n<p>to which Plato would ascribe many wonders<\/p>\n<p>it had been developing for 1000 years<\/p>\n<p>and was approaching a new golden age<\/p>\n<p>it was a civilization where even slaves had rights<\/p>\n<p>where most homes had running water<\/p>\n<p>flush toilets, showers<\/p>\n<p>and even central heating<\/p>\n<p>it was a civilization on the verge of unprecedented greatness<\/p>\n<p>poised to invent the telescope<\/p>\n<p>and who knows what else<\/p>\n<p>they appear to have been poised, in 1628 B.C., on a pinnacle<\/p>\n<p>which would not be reached again for 3000 years.<\/p>\n<p>The island of Thera<\/p>\n<p>back then probably known as &#8216;Strongule&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>the round island<\/p>\n<p>it lay 70 miles north of Crete<\/p>\n<p>and was one of the &#8220;suburban&#8221; centers of Minoan civilization<\/p>\n<p>an important, if not primary, center<\/p>\n<p>the island was a mountain a mile high<\/p>\n<p>and some 19km wide<\/p>\n<p>and on the southern shore, a magnificent city<\/p>\n<p>with a lighthouse to guide ships into the harbour<\/p>\n<p>the city spread for more than a mile along the coast<\/p>\n<p>The Greeks<\/p>\n<p>were waging a War of Independence<\/p>\n<p>they sorely wanted out from under the Minoans<\/p>\n<p>but Minoan technology was too far ahead<\/p>\n<p>Minoan power was too strong<\/p>\n<p>still, battle was met<\/p>\n<p>the allies of Zeus<\/p>\n<p>the chief god of the Greeks<\/p>\n<p>vs the allies of Kronos<\/p>\n<p>the god of the world and of time<\/p>\n<p>one of the Titans<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>Summer, 1628 B.C., Egypt<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Pharaoh: Tuthmosis III<\/p>\n<p>he had been in power for perhaps only 2 years<\/p>\n<p>coming to power in the place of King\/Queen Hatshepsut<\/p>\n<p>who he had murdered<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong>Autumn, 1628 B.C., Around the World<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In the Med<\/p>\n<p>a powerful storm was blowing east across the sea<\/p>\n<p>the ships from Crete were struggling to make headway<\/p>\n<p>as they headed home with their cargos<\/p>\n<p>On Thera<\/p>\n<p>was there, perhaps, just a tad more smoke on top of the mountain?<\/p>\n<p>and the mountain had been heard to rumble a tad of late<\/p>\n<p>but life was certainly fine<\/p>\n<p>On Crete<\/p>\n<p>no one was worried about the Greeks<\/p>\n<p>their silly little rebellion would soon be put to rest<\/p>\n<p>and Minoans would once again reign supreme<\/p>\n<p>Boom<\/p>\n<p>the volcano which was the island of Thera would let go<\/p>\n<p>causing the largest explosion in human memory<\/p>\n<p>up to 50 times that of Krakatoa<\/p>\n<p>it would rip the floor of the Mediterranean Sea<\/p>\n<p>opening cracks running 100 miles from Thera<\/p>\n<p>some 50 cubic miles of molten debris were shot straight up<\/p>\n<p>and out from the island<\/p>\n<p>one scientist, examining the debris fields, would write<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;that volcanic death clouds had surged out to all points<\/p>\n<p>of the compass, writhing and snakelike, clutching the<\/p>\n<p>ground &#8230; and in the paths of those snakes (each like<\/p>\n<p>a sea of fire cutting through billowing black smoke) &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>the air was hotter than live steam, hotter than molten<\/p>\n<p>lead, hotter than iron emerging white from a furnace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>the heavier debris rained down around the island<\/p>\n<p>but the lighter stuff rose higher and higher<\/p>\n<p>much of it eventually circling the globe<\/p>\n<p>bring winter in the midst of summer<\/p>\n<p>and then falling as acid snow on Greenland<\/p>\n<p>the medium weight ash cloud spread mostly east<\/p>\n<p>across parts of Turkey a layer several feet deep fell<\/p>\n<p>reaching almost to Cyprus<\/p>\n<p>to the west it did not make it as far<\/p>\n<p>the storm pushed it back to the east<\/p>\n<p>the ash flows would incinerate civilizations<\/p>\n<p>120 miles east of Thera 2 feet of ash fell on the island of Kos<\/p>\n<p>it was enough to suffocate anyone<\/p>\n<p>if it weren&#8217;t for the fact that it was hot<\/p>\n<p>hot enough to instantly scorch men&#8217;s lungs<\/p>\n<p>and to turn their tongues into charcoal<\/p>\n<p>the tsunamis ripped through the Mediterranean<\/p>\n<p>reaching Turkey, they would be funnelled by the two peninsulas<\/p>\n<p>a wall of water 800 feet high would sweep 30 miles inland<\/p>\n<p>all traces of civilization here were scoured away<\/p>\n<p>even today the scablands left behind are visible<\/p>\n<p>reaching the Nile delta, the tsunami would be 40 feet high<\/p>\n<p>the sound of the explosion would circle the globe 16 times<\/p>\n<p>permanently deafening anyone within 300 miles<\/p>\n<p>who wasn&#8217;t killed by the fallout<\/p>\n<p>the earthquake shook houses off their foundations in Crete<\/p>\n<p>and the entire island was blanketed in ash<\/p>\n<p>with the eastern side receiving most of the fallout<\/p>\n<p>because of the way the wind blew<\/p>\n<p>but an entire civilization fell<\/p>\n<p>the Minoans were no more<\/p>\n<p>nothing was left but a few straggling survivors<\/p>\n<p>some of whom would flee by ship from the Greeks<\/p>\n<p>Farewell Minoa, Hello Greece<\/p>\n<p>into the ruin of the Minoan Empire moved the Greeks<\/p>\n<p>taking the reigns of power into their hands<\/p>\n<p>they quickly assumed the position of the Minoans<\/p>\n<p>within a decade Greek ships traveled where Minoans had before<\/p>\n<p>in Egypt, pictures showing Minoan traders were repainted<\/p>\n<p>to show Greek dress instead<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong>The Witnesses<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Thera<\/p>\n<p>not much is left of this once magnificent island<\/p>\n<p>once a mountain, now a crater<\/p>\n<p>8 miles wide and a half mile deep<\/p>\n<p>now under 200 feet of volcanic ash, the city is coming to light<\/p>\n<p>China<\/p>\n<p>of Emperor Chieh, the historians would write<\/p>\n<p>he &#8220;lacked virtue&#8221;, and because of this, &#8220;the Sun was<\/p>\n<p>distressed &#8230; during the last years of Chieh, ice formed<\/p>\n<p>in [summer] mornings and frosts in the sixth month [July]<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; hot and cold weather arrived in disorder. The five<\/p>\n<p>cereal crops withered and died.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>this disorder would last for 7 years<\/p>\n<p>in the northernmost provinces whole populations starved<\/p>\n<p>or warred, returning to tribal nomadism<\/p>\n<p>we can date it to this period because of Chinese astronomy<\/p>\n<p>which marked time by the passage of noteworthy heavenly events<\/p>\n<p>which other civilizations also saw<\/p>\n<p>Greenland<\/p>\n<p>ice cores show a layer of ash-covered snow matching Thera<\/p>\n<p>measuring the layers laid down year by year gives close dates<\/p>\n<p>1664 to 1624 B.C.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland<\/p>\n<p>the peat bogs preserve oak trees well enough to read the rings<\/p>\n<p>once again, the 1620s B.C. show abnormally narrow growth rings<\/p>\n<p>summers to cold to support normal growth<\/p>\n<p>California<\/p>\n<p>the Bristlecone Pines are now some 5000 years old<\/p>\n<p>retaining in their growth rings a yearly climate record<\/p>\n<p>examining them show ice damage during the summer of 1627<\/p>\n<p>as they show ice damage in 1816 following the Tambora volcano<\/p>\n<p>which ushered in the &#8220;year without summer&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>when there was skating in St. James Park in England<\/p>\n<p>in the middle of summer<\/p>\n<p>Greece<\/p>\n<p>The Theogony, the earliest Greek poem to survive describes<\/p>\n<p>the conflict that brought the war to an end<\/p>\n<p>it says (in part)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The limitless expanse of the sea echoed terribly; the Earth<\/p>\n<p>rumbled loudly, and the broad area of the sky shook and groaned<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and a heavy quaking penetrated into the gloomy depths of<\/p>\n<p>Tartarus [a sunless abyss below Hades] &#8212; the sharp vibration<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; forming a solid roll of sacred fire. Fertile tracts of land<\/p>\n<p>all around cracked as they burned, and immense forests roared in<\/p>\n<p>the fire. The whole Earth and the ocean and the barren sea began<\/p>\n<p>to boil. An immense flame shot up into the atmosphere, so that<\/p>\n<p>the hot air enveloped the Titans &#8230; The sight there was to see<\/p>\n<p>and the noise there was to hear made it seem as if Earth and<\/p>\n<p>vast sky above were colliding. As if Earth were being smashed<\/p>\n<p>and [as] if sky were smashing down upon her &#8230; The winds added<\/p>\n<p>to the confusion, whirling dust around together with great Zeus&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>volleys of thunder and lightening &#8230; [The gods] attacked<\/p>\n<p>relentlessly, throwing showers of three hundred stones one after<\/p>\n<p>another with all the force of their enormous hands, till they<\/p>\n<p>darkened the Titans with a cloud of missiles. &#8230; Monstrous Earth<\/p>\n<p>gave birth to &#8230; a hundred snake heads &#8230; with blank tongues<\/p>\n<p>flickering and fire flashing &#8230; large tracts of the earth were<\/p>\n<p>set on fire by the prodigious heat and melted tin heated in<\/p>\n<p>molded crucibles by skillful workmen, or like iron, the<\/p>\n<p>strongest metal, softened by the heat of fire in some mountain<\/p>\n<p>cleft.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Egypt<\/p>\n<p>a quarter-inch thick layer of Theran ash covers the Nile delta<\/p>\n<p>now buried beneath the sediment the Nile has been dumping<\/p>\n<p>and then there is the Ipuwar papyrus<\/p>\n<p>dating from the time of Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III<\/p>\n<p>it says (in part)<\/p>\n<p>The land&#8211;to its whole extent confusion and terrible noise&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>For nine days there was no exit from the palace and no one<\/p>\n<p>could see the face of his fellow. &#8230; Upper Egypt suffered<\/p>\n<p>devastation &#8230; blood everywhere &#8230; pestilence throughout the<\/p>\n<p>country. &#8230; The Sun is covered and does not shine to the sight<\/p>\n<p>of men. Life is no longer possible when the Sun is concealed<\/p>\n<p>behind the clouds. Ra has turned his face from mankind. If only<\/p>\n<p>it would shine even for one hour! No one knows when it is<\/p>\n<p>midday. One&#8217;s shadow is not discernible. The Sun in the heavens<\/p>\n<p>resembles the moon. &#8230; Lo, the desert pervades the land,<\/p>\n<p>townships are laid waste, and a foreign bow people are come to<\/p>\n<p>Egypt! People flee &#8230; and it is tents that they make like<\/p>\n<p>nomads.<\/p>\n<p>Psalm 46?<\/p>\n<p>it starts out saying<\/p>\n<p>God is our refuge and strength,<\/p>\n<p>an ever-present help in trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way<\/p>\n<p>and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,<\/p>\n<p>though its waters roar and foam<\/p>\n<p>and the mountains quake with their surging.<\/p>\n<p>guess where the Philistines came from?<\/p>\n<p>Jeremiah 47:4 tells us<\/p>\n<p>they are the remnant of Crete<\/p>\n<p>and Philistine &#8220;history&#8221; bears this out<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li><strong>So What?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I draw your attention to Exodus 10:21-23<\/p>\n<p>could Thera be the plague of darkness?<\/p>\n<p>and how many of the other plagues could it have caused?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li><strong>Moses and Historicity<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Trying to nail Moses down in history has always been difficult<\/p>\n<p>there are no corroborating witnesses<\/p>\n<p>Egyptian records do not mention him<\/p>\n<p>no other sources than the Bible mention him<\/p>\n<p>the Bible does not give many details of Egypt at the time<\/p>\n<p>for instance, it does not mention the pyramids<\/p>\n<p>already 1000 years old when Moses was born<\/p>\n<p>nor does it name the kings<\/p>\n<p>But now, perhaps, we can truly date the Exodus<\/p>\n<p>with the help of some trees in California<\/p>\n<p>we can date the plague of darkness at 1628 B.C.<\/p>\n<p>which means that Moses was some 80 years old then<\/p>\n<p>and the people of Israel had been in Egypt for some 430 years<\/p>\n<p>What other historical evidence fits this picture?<\/p>\n<p>the dynastic change that had happened<\/p>\n<p>and the people who were currently on the throne<\/p>\n<p>The Hyksos had ruled Egypt for many years<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Asiatic&#8221; invaders had swept into Egypt and taken over<\/p>\n<p>setting up puppet kings or ruling themselves<\/p>\n<p>through five Dynasties they ruled Egypt<\/p>\n<p>a time called the Intermediate Period<\/p>\n<p>a time when the glory of Egypt faded<\/p>\n<p>these &#8220;Asiatic&#8221; invaders were Canaanites<\/p>\n<p>not Chinese<\/p>\n<p>either they, or the Egyptians before them were in power<\/p>\n<p>when Joseph was sold into slavery<\/p>\n<p>Around 1730 B.C this changed as rebellion was in the wind<\/p>\n<p>Sekenere III lead a rebellion<\/p>\n<p>he was one of the puppet kings<\/p>\n<p>but he was not successful and was killed by the Hyksos<\/p>\n<p>Amose I, his son, came to power<\/p>\n<p>he organized a mutiny of Asiatics, Africans and Egyptians<\/p>\n<p>and the Hyksos were routed back to Sinai<\/p>\n<p>and south into the Sudan<\/p>\n<p>Egypt was once again a sovereign nation<\/p>\n<p>and some of the persecution of Asiatics would start<\/p>\n<p>in ~ 1710 Amenhotep I came to power<\/p>\n<p>the Hyksos tried to regain power<\/p>\n<p>but Amenhotep led campaigns into Canaan<\/p>\n<p>and destroyed their intentions<\/p>\n<p>in ~ 1690 Tuthmosis I can to power<\/p>\n<p>he had two sons and a daughter<\/p>\n<p>her name was Hatshepsut<\/p>\n<p>both of the sons died mysteriously<\/p>\n<p>probably at the instigation of Mutnefret<\/p>\n<p>a concubine of Tuthmosis who had a son<\/p>\n<p>who she wanted on the throne<\/p>\n<p>two other half-brothers of Hatshepsut also died<\/p>\n<p>also mysteriously<\/p>\n<p>as Tuthmosis neared death there was no one he considered heir<\/p>\n<p>except for his daughter Hatshepsut<\/p>\n<p>taking everything in hand, he had her elevated<\/p>\n<p>and made both King and Queen of Egypt<\/p>\n<p>only a male could be Pharaoh<\/p>\n<p>so he had her declared such<\/p>\n<p>for much of her public life<\/p>\n<p>she would wear a beard<\/p>\n<p>in ~ 1665 Hatshepsut inherited (possibly only 20 years old)<\/p>\n<p>but Mutnefret was very unhappy with this<\/p>\n<p>and started gathering support for a rebellion<\/p>\n<p>acting quickly, Hatshepsut married her son<\/p>\n<p>named him Tuthmosis II<\/p>\n<p>and elevated him to co-regent<\/p>\n<p>he wasn&#8217;t too effectual<\/p>\n<p>just the kind of king she wanted<\/p>\n<p>in ~ 1645 Tuthmosis II died<\/p>\n<p>rumour suggested his concubine Isis poisoned him<\/p>\n<p>once again, so her son could rule as Tuthmosis III<\/p>\n<p>he was elevated to the co-regency<\/p>\n<p>filling his father&#8217;s place<\/p>\n<p>but it wasn&#8217;t enough<\/p>\n<p>to cement her power Hatshepsut declared her divinity<\/p>\n<p>apparently with the full blessing of the priests<\/p>\n<p>and stories of her &#8220;immaculate conception&#8221; were told<\/p>\n<p>but then Halley&#8217;s Comet visited the planet<\/p>\n<p>and Tuthmosis III took it as a sign of the gods&#8217; favour<\/p>\n<p>and set himself up as a 2nd divine leader<\/p>\n<p>his supporters began to refer to him as<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;a circling comet which shoots out flames and gives<\/p>\n<p>forth its substance in fire&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>in ~ 1635-30 Tuthmosis III made his move<\/p>\n<p>for certain all of Hatshepsut&#8217;s advisors were killed<\/p>\n<p>and their tombs defaced<\/p>\n<p>and Hatshepsut herself &#8220;disappears&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>and every single statue or stele or pictograph of her<\/p>\n<p>Tuthmosis had destroyed or buried<\/p>\n<p>Tuthmosis tried to wipe out all memory of Hatshepsut<\/p>\n<p>but so well preserved were the things he buried<\/p>\n<p>that today they stand again where he toppled them<\/p>\n<p>within 3 months Tuthmosis III had reinstituted Asiatic persecution<\/p>\n<p>something Hatshepsut had stopped<\/p>\n<p>allowing the asiatic immigrants full status with Egyptians<\/p>\n<p>in the empire<\/p>\n<p>So, was Hatshepsut the pharaoh&#8217;s daughter who found Moses in the river?<\/p>\n<p>it is by no means certain<\/p>\n<p>especially if the dates we have given are accurate<\/p>\n<p>she would not have been born when Moses was<\/p>\n<p>but Amenhotep could have had a daughter we don&#8217;t know about<\/p>\n<p>and the dates we have given are only guesses<\/p>\n<p>from the best available evidence<\/p>\n<p>Was Tuthmosis III the pharaoh Moses dealt with for the Israelites?<\/p>\n<p>once again we can&#8217;t say with certainty<\/p>\n<p>but it certainly fits<\/p>\n<p>and all the evidence suggests that he was the Pharaoh<\/p>\n<p>when Thera exploded<\/p>\n<p>sending a plague of darkness over the known world<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li><strong>Guesses and Hunches<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Geologists and Archeologists rarely seem to agree<\/p>\n<p>but lately the geologists have been winning the dating game<\/p>\n<p>Thera is one such example<\/p>\n<p>where their dates did not match archeologists&#8217; guesses<\/p>\n<p>who put the explosion closer to 1400 B.C.<\/p>\n<p>an example where &#8220;proof&#8221; came from a strange source<\/p>\n<p>a 5000 year old tree<\/p>\n<p>But they really are only guesses<\/p>\n<p>we really don&#8217;t know<\/p>\n<p>nor, perhaps, do we really need to<\/p>\n<p>But once again, the Bible gets some backing from unexpected sources<\/p>\n<p>and a miracle once thought to be impossible by some<\/p>\n<p>is shown to be utterly possible<\/p>\n<p>and to have actually happened<\/p>\n<p>And we also note that this date, if accurate, pushes Abraham way back<\/p>\n<p>back long enough for several generations to wander Canaan<\/p>\n<p>and for 430 years of time in Egypt to pass<\/p>\n<p>before you know it, we&#8217;ve pushed Abraham back before 2000 B.C.<\/p>\n<p>back before Hammurabi perhaps<\/p>\n<p>or does he carry Hammurabi back with him?<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t really know<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is Google&#8217;s cache of https:\/\/david.wiseman.ca\/Sooth\/BibleStudy\/12Days\/04-exodus.html.
