He\u00a0is one of a number of writers who have\u00a0identified ancient Syracuse in <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/sicily\/\">Sicily<\/a> as the inspiration for Plato\u2019s city of Atlantis<sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/n-r\/\">531<\/a>]<\/sup>. His\u00a0paper has been translated for the first time into English by Cecelia Murphy, the project being edited and funded by the German researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/franke-thorwald-c\/\">Thorwald C. Franke<\/a><sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/e-f\/\">881<\/a>]<\/sup>. The original was published in Swedish over a century ago in 1917.<\/p>\n<p>Rudberg begins his work with a review and refutation of the more popular Atlantis theories of his day. As this\u00a0paper was published less than 40 years after <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/donnelly-ignatius-loyola\/\">Donnelly\u2019<\/a>s seminal work, <em>Atlantis: The Antediluvian World<\/em><sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/d\/\">021<\/a>]<\/sup>,\u00a0\u00a0was written, much of the material will appear dated, particularly as many of today\u2019s better known theories were still many years in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Rudberg moves on to outline his own view that Plato, who had first-hand experience of Sicily, <em>\u201cwhen developing his portrayal of Atlantis, had the Dionysian\u2019s Syracuse in mind\u201d<\/em> but added <em>\u201cI do not claim that this is an exhaustive explanation\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In spite of the date of the original monograph, this English translation is a valuable addition, to the Atlantis literature of the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, in that language.<\/p>\n<p>Franke has reported that the German magazine Focus, published an article on Rudberg\u2019s views<sup>(a) <\/sup> in October 2013.
