S<\/strong>weden<\/strong> was claimed to be the location of Atlantis by Olaus (Olaf) Rudbeck<\/a> in the 17th century. Before him another Swede, Johannes Bureus<\/a>, expressed similar views. His friend Carl Lundius<\/a> supported Rudbeck’s theories, but received none of the acclaim.<\/p>\n

In the 18th century Carl Friedrich Ba\u00ebr <\/a>was happy to follow a fashion, which placed Atlantis in the Holy Land<\/a>. I am not aware of any major Swedish contribution to Atlantology<\/a> in the 19th century. However, the following century saw a number of Swedish researchers make valuable contributions to the subject.<\/p>\n

The discovery of the Mid Atlantic Ridge<\/a> led Ren\u00e9 Malaise<\/a> and Hans Pettersson<\/a> to suggest the Azores<\/a> as remnants of Atlantis, an idea still popular today. Around the same time Gunnar Rudberg<\/a> proposed that Syracuse<\/a> in Sicily<\/a> had inspired some of Plato\u2019s description of Atlantis. Arvid H\u00f6gbom<\/a> advocated the North Sea as the location of Atlantis in 1915, long before J\u00fcrgen Spanuth<\/a>. In the same region Nils Bergquist<\/a> opted for the Dogger Bank <\/a>as has Ulf Erlingsson<\/a>.<\/p>\n

More recently, we seem to have come full circle as Bertil Falk<\/a> has revived some of Rudbeck\u2019s ideas(a)<\/span><\/sup> and a short illustrated 2007 paper (updated 2015)(b)<\/span><\/sup> by Robert Fritzius<\/a> also added some additional modern support. However, for something quite different we have Carl Festin<\/a> promoting a Mediterranean location.<\/p>\n

Nils-Axel M\u00f6rner and Bob Lind, two controversial researchers, have proposed, in a number of papers, that a Bronze Age trading centre existed in southeast Sweden, which had links with the Mycenaeans<\/a>, Minoans<\/a> and Phoenicians<\/a> in the Mediterranean. They suggest that ancient references to Hyperborea<\/a> may have been generated by this trade. However, although they do not associate Hyperborea with the story of Atlantis, they delivered their theories in papers presented to the Atlantis Conferences of 2008 <\/a>[750<\/a>.685]<\/sup> and 2011<\/a>(c)<\/sup>. They also touch on a number of other peripheral subjects including Cygnus<\/a>, archaeoastronomy<\/a> and amber<\/a>. Similar views on early Baltic<\/a> trade with the Mediterranean have been expressed elsewhere(d)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n
