{"id":4052,"date":"2010-06-12T09:13:39","date_gmt":"2010-06-12T09:13:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/termier-pierre\/"},"modified":"2025-11-08T07:29:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T07:29:09","slug":"termier-pierre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/termier-pierre\/","title":{"rendered":"Termier, Pierre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Pierre<\/strong> <strong>T<\/strong><strong>ermier <\/strong><strong>(1859-1930)<\/strong> was a French geologist who analysed basaltic lava dredged up from the Atlantic seafloor 500 miles north of the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/azores\/\">Azores<\/a> in 1898. Termier was confused <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/termier1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-27889\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/termier1.jpg\" alt=\"termier1\" width=\"179\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a>when he found that the sample was vitreous rather than crystalline. This had to mean that the water had been submerged after cooling. Since lava disintegrates after 15,000 years Termier was forced to conclude that there had been volcanic activity above sea level in the relatively recent past, perhaps coinciding with the destruction of Atlantis.<\/p>\n<p>In 1912 Termier delivered a lecture<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/t-v\/\"><sup>574<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup> to the Institut Oc\u00e9anographique<sup>(b)<\/sup> in which he outlined his belief that Atlantis had been located in the Atlantic, a machine translation in English is available here<sup>(c)<\/sup>. A brief 9-page article by Termier, entitled <em>N<\/em><em>ew<\/em><em> L<\/em><em>ight<\/em> <em>on the<\/em><em> L<\/em><em>ost<\/em><em> A<\/em><em>tlantis, <\/em>has\u00a0been reprinted by Kessinger Publishing.
