At its simplest it is applied to nations whose wealth is derived from trade baked by naval supremacy. Other early thalassocracies were the Minoans and the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/phoenicians\/\">Phoenicians<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Trireme.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-28372\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Trireme.png\" alt=\"Trireme\" width=\"249\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Plato describes the busy shipyards full of triremes and their equipment (Critias 117d). While the use of the word \u2018triremes\u2019 may be an anachronism it was probably introduced as the easiest way to impress his audience. However, triremes were warships but Critias 117e refers to the commercial harbour which \u201cwas filled with ships and merchants from all quarters\u201d. All this would seem to indicate an important trading nation backed by\u00a0powerful naval support.<\/p>\n<p>Some commentators have highlighted on the apparent conflict between Critias 117 with its description of a naval power and Critias 113e which relates that \u201cat that time neither ships nor sailing were as yet in existence\u201d.
