Charles<\/strong> D<\/strong>arwin <\/strong>(1809-1882) <\/strong>is reported in Wikipedia (a)<\/sup> to have been “<\/strong>dismissive of the ideas that others had put forward of sunken continents like<\/em> Atlantis.” <\/em>This opinion is dated to around 1855.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Edward Forbes <\/a>was one of the first, in 1846 [1471<\/a>]<\/sup>, to hypothesise the existence of a continent in the Atlantic<\/a> linking Ireland<\/a>, the Azores<\/a> and the Iberian Peninsula<\/a>, which was popularly called ‘Atlantis’. Charles Darwin\u00a0\u00a0described his idea as \u2018speculative\u2019.<\/p>\n

This would appear to conflict with Marco Ciardi<\/a>, who claimed that Darwin had accepted the existence of Atlantis, I presume later, but did so “under the influence of, among others, the botanist J. D. Hooker”<\/em> and “reverted to the hypothesis of a lost continent to which the Atlantic islands testified since they constituted the tips of its highest mountains.” <\/em>This information was cited by Pierre Vidal-Naquet <\/a>in The Atlantis Story<\/em> [<\/sup>580<\/sup><\/a>.xxii]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Ignatius Donnelly <\/a>sent a copy of his Atlantis<\/em> to Darwin, but received a less than enthusiastic response(b)<\/sup>.<\/p>\n
