{"id":43012,"date":"2019-08-23T07:42:30","date_gmt":"2019-08-23T06:42:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/?p=43012"},"modified":"2019-08-23T12:02:01","modified_gmt":"2019-08-23T11:02:01","slug":"darwin-charles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/darwin-charles\/","title":{"rendered":"Darwin, Charles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Charles<\/strong> <strong>D<\/strong><strong>arwin <\/strong><strong>(1809-1882) <\/strong>is reported in Wikipedia <sup>(a)<\/sup> to have been <strong>&#8220;<\/strong><em>dismissive of the ideas that others had put forward of sunken continents like<\/em> <em>Atlantis.&#8221; <\/em>This opinion is dated to around 1855.<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Charles_Darwin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-43013\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Charles_Darwin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/forbes-edward\/\">Edward Forbes <\/a>was one of the first, in 1846 <sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/bibliography\/e-f\/\">1471<\/a>]<\/sup>, to hypothesise the existence of a continent in the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/atlantic-ocean\/\">Atlantic<\/a> linking <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/ireland\/\">Ireland<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/azores\/\">Azores<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/iberia\/\">Iberian Peninsula<\/a>, which was popularly called &#8216;Atlantis&#8217;. Charles Darwin\u00a0\u00a0described his idea as \u2018speculative\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>This would appear to conflict with <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/ciardi-marco-n\/\">Marco Ciardi<\/a>, who claimed that Darwin had accepted the existence of Atlantis, I presume later, but did so <em>&#8220;under the influence of, among others, the botanist J. D.
