Lawrence River<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&gt;<\/span><\/strong>was suggested as the site of an ancient Greek colony by Verplanck Colvin\u00a0(1847-1920), an American lawyer, in a lecture<sup>(a) <\/sup> to the Albany Institute of Boston in 1893. He based this idea primarily on his interpretation of Plutarch&#8217;s <em>On the Apparent Face in the Moon&#8217;s Face<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/atlantis-conference-%e2%80%93-melos-2005\/\">2005 Atlantis Conference<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/spedicato-emilio\/\">Emilio Spedicato <\/a>presented a paper <sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/a\/\">629<\/a>.411]<\/sup>, in which he also claimed that the the St. Lawrence region had been visited by what he described as &#8220;the ancestors of the Greeks&#8221;. He also cites <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/plutarchus-mestrius\/\">Plutarch<\/a> in support of his contention.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>St. Lawrence River unexpectedly became an Atlantis candidate in 2018 when <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/koutlis-manolis\/\">Manolis Koutlis<\/a> published <em>In the Shadow <\/em><sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/k-l\/\">1617<\/a>]<\/sup>, in which he claims the existence of Greek colonies in <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/canada\/\">Canada<\/a> as early as 1500 BC. He proposed that Atlantis had been located in today&#8217;s Gulf of St. Lawrence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While these conclusions may be the result of ambiguity and\/or translation problems, in my opinion the strongest arguments against their claims are<\/p>\n<p>(1) There is no archaeological evidence whatsoever to support the idea of a Greek colony in the region over hundreds of years,<\/p>\n<p>(2) A Greek colony in North America lasting that long would not have been ignored by the classical writers of the period &#8211; but it has.<\/p>\n<p>(3) The Greeks only knew three continents &#8211; Europe, Asia and Africa.<sup>(b)<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>(4) How does Koutlis explain why Atlantis situated in the mouth of the St. Lawrence would launch an attack on Athens or Egypt over 4,000 miles away?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><sup>(a) <\/sup> <em>Atlantis,Vol.23, No.3,May\/June, 1970<\/em><\/p>\n<p><sup>(b)<\/sup> Herodotus.
