{"id":570,"date":"2010-01-22T21:48:20","date_gmt":"2010-01-22T21:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/570\/"},"modified":"2020-08-18T07:35:56","modified_gmt":"2020-08-18T06:35:56","slug":"570","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/570\/","title":{"rendered":"Oviedo y Vald\u00e9z, Gonzalo Fern\u00e1ndez"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Gonzalo Fern\u00e1ndez Oviedo y Vald\u00e9z (1478-1557)<\/strong> was a Spanish historian and in 1519\u00a0the author of what was probably the first literary work produced in the New World, <i>Libro del muy esforzado e invencible caballero Don Claribalte.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/oviedopineapple.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-28018\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/oviedopineapple-124x300.jpg\" alt=\"oviedopineapple\" width=\"124\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/oviedopineapple-124x300.jpg 124w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/oviedopineapple.jpg 264w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 124px) 100vw, 124px\" \/><\/a>On his return to Spain, Oviedo wrote an important history of the Spanish Indies, <i>La historia general y natural de las Indias<\/i><sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/n-r\/\"><sup>1117<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup><i>, <\/i>which included what is believed to be the first illustration of a pineapple.<i>\u00a0<\/i>Most of his work was not published until the mid-19th century. (volume one available online<sup>(a)<\/sup>)<\/p>\n<p>Sprague de Camp, without citation, listed<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/d\/\"><sup>0194<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup> Oviedo as having located Atlantis in what is modern Iraq and that the survivors of its destruction escaped to the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/america\/\">Americas<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/franke-thorwald-c\/\">Thorwald C. Franke<\/a> has drawn attention to the absence of any such reference in <em>&#8216;La Historia&#8217;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">*<\/span>In his <em>Historia, <\/em>Oviedo identified the Antilles as the legendary <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hesperides\/\">Hesperides<\/a>.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">*<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/kershaw-stephen-p-n\/\">Stephen P.
