{"id":596,"date":"2010-01-27T21:50:03","date_gmt":"2010-01-27T21:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/?p=596"},"modified":"2026-01-05T09:31:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T09:31:00","slug":"disappearing-islands-amended","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/disappearing-islands-amended\/","title":{"rendered":"Disappearing Islands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>D<\/strong><strong>isappearing<\/strong><strong> I<\/strong><strong>slands, <\/strong>sometimes known as \u2018phantom islands\u2019 have been recorded in many parts of the world usually due to volcanic or seismic activity.\u00a0However, there is now evidence that some of these phantom islands never actually existed<sup>(c)<\/sup>.\u00a0The most recent instance, in the Pacific, was reported on the BBC website<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(d<\/span><\/sup><strong><sup>)<\/sup><\/strong> , where \u2018Sandy Island\u2019 which was shown on Google Maps was proven not to exist at all.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of such islands are trotted out as some sort of proof of the type of event that caused the destruction of Atlantis. This suggestion does not stand up to the most cursory scrutiny. Firstly the examples adduced are usually small with short existences above water. The Atlantis portrayed by Plato is a large well-cultivated island with a large settled <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/population-of-atlantis\/\">population<\/a>. No island of that extent, longevity or development has ever been reported lost through seismic or volcanic forces.
