{"id":629,"date":"2010-02-02T07:39:58","date_gmt":"2010-02-02T07:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/?p=629"},"modified":"2025-07-30T17:05:07","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T16:05:07","slug":"charles-schuchert-new","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/charles-schuchert-new\/","title":{"rendered":"Schuchert, Charles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Charles<\/strong> <strong>S<\/strong><strong>chuchert<\/strong> <strong>(1858-1942)<\/strong> was an outstanding American paleographer and palaeontologist and recipient of many <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/schuchert.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-26911\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/schuchert.jpg\" alt=\"schuchert\" width=\"150\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>professional honours at home and abroad<sup>(<\/sup><sup>a)<\/sup>. In a paper entitled <em>Atlantis and the Permanency of the North Atlantic Ocean Bottom<\/em> delivered to the National Academy of Sciences in 1917<sup>(b)<\/sup>, Schuchert concluded \u2018that there was no known geologic data that prove or even help to prove the existence of Plato\u2019s Atlantis in historic times\u2019. He also noted \u2018that the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/azores\/\">Azores<\/a> are volcanic islands and are not composed of rocks seen on the continent\u2019 and accepted the conclusions of the German geologist Curt Gagel<span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><sup>(d<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup><\/span> that five of the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/cape-verde-islands\/\">Cape Verde Islands <\/a>and three of the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/canary-islands\/\">Canaries<\/a> are \u2018unmistakably\u2019 continental.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He also expressed similar views in a critique of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/termier-pierre\/\">Pierre Termier\u2019s <\/a>theory of Atlantis in the Atlantic in a paper published in the American Geographical Society\u2019s Geographical Review of January 1917.
