Among his assertions was that the ancient Spanish province of Dertossa was named after <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/tarshish\/\">Tarshish<\/a>, as its name was a corruption of Tartessa meaning \u2018Little\u2019 Tartessos.<\/p>\n<p>Borchart, along with his pupil <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/pierre-daniel-huet-new\/\">Pierre Daniel Huet<\/a>, also claimed that the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/phoenicians\/\">Phoenicians<\/a> had settled in America, an idea that has been revived from time to time, up to the present day. Borchart and Huet also promoted the idea that the Atlantis story was reflected in the patriarchal history recorded in the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/the-bible-amended\/\">Bible<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/spence-james-lewis-thomas-chalmers\/\">Lewis Spence<\/a> accuses<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/s\/\"><sup>259<\/sup><\/a><sup>.33]<\/sup> Borchart and Huet, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/gerardus-johannis-vossius-amended\/\">Vossius<\/a>, of \u2018ingenious misreadings\u2019 of scripture to support their contention.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Samuel Borchart (1599-1667) was a renowned Huguenot pastor and biblical scholar who produced his two-volume Geographia Sacra seu Phaleg et Canaan (Caen. 1646), which was a very influential work during the 17th century.
