{"id":660,"date":"2010-02-09T17:00:30","date_gmt":"2010-02-09T17:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/?p=660"},"modified":"2017-09-19T08:58:24","modified_gmt":"2017-09-19T07:58:24","slug":"translations-new","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/translations-new\/","title":{"rendered":"Translations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>T<\/strong><strong>ranslations<\/strong> of Plato\u2019s works from Latin into the vernacular languages of Europe began in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<p>The first <strong>French<\/strong> translation of Timaeus was by Loys(Louis) de Roy (1510-1577) published in 1582.<\/p>\n<p>Dardi Bembo translated the works of Plato into <strong>Italian<\/strong> (1601-1607, Venice)<\/p>\n<p>Andr\u00e9 Dacier the noted French classicist\u00a0 translated some of Plato\u2019s works into French in 1699 and two years later translated his work into English.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest known <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/english-translations\/\">English translation<\/a> of any of Plato\u2019s works is <em>Axiochus <\/em>by Edmund Spenser in 1591. The first <strong>English<\/strong> translation of the <strong>entire <\/strong>works of Plato was that of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/taylor-thomas\/\">Thomas Taylor<\/a> in 1804.<\/p>\n<p>Also in 1804, Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) provided a <strong>German<\/strong> translation, which is still in print.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">*<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/franke-thorwald-c\/\">Thorwald C. Franke<\/a> has provided the Atlantis sections of <em>Timaeus<\/em> and <em>Critias<\/em> from the German translations of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/susemihl-franz-n\/\">Franz Susemihl <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hieronymus-mueller-new\/\">Hieronymus M\u00fcller<\/a><sup>(a) <\/sup>together with the English translations of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/bury-rev-robert-gregg\/\">Bury<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/jowett-benjamin\/\">Jowett<\/a> in a parallel format.<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">*<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>V.N. Karpov (1798-1867) translated most of Plato&#8217;s work into <strong>Russian <\/strong>in 1841.<\/p>\n<p>Patricio de Azc\u00e1rate Patricio de Azc\u00e1rate \u00b7 Madrid 1871-1872 \u00b7 11 vol\u00famenes (1800-1886) published the first complete works of Plato in <strong>Spanish<\/strong> in 11 volumes (Madrid 1871-1872).<\/p>\n<p>2001 saw volume I of <em>Plato\u2019s Complete Works<\/em> published in <strong>Romanian.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1974, Michitaro Tanaka (1902-1985) and his associates produced\u00a0 a fifteen-volume translation of all the dialogues (genuine and spurious) with a full index into <strong>Japanese<\/strong>.
