{"id":868,"date":"2010-03-23T06:35:57","date_gmt":"2010-03-23T06:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/?p=868"},"modified":"2026-02-13T10:16:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T10:16:07","slug":"gobekli-tepe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/gobekli-tepe\/","title":{"rendered":"G\u00f6bekli Tepe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>G<\/strong><strong>\u00f6bekli <\/strong><strong>T<\/strong><strong>epe <\/strong>is a site in South-East <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/turkey\/\">Turkey<\/a>, \u00a0just north of the Syrian border near the town of Sanliurfa, that has been excavated for the past 15 years. The <em>Smithsonian.com <\/em>website noted<sup>(be<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>\u00a0that <em>&#8220;<\/em><em>Gobekli Tepe was first examined\u2014and dismissed\u2014by University of Chicago and Istanbul University anthropologists in the 1960s. As part of a sweeping survey of the region, they visited the hill, saw some broken slabs of limestone and assumed the mound was nothing more than an abandoned medieval cemetery.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>The site work has been led by the German archaeologist, the late Klaus Schmidt, who has dated the site to 9600 BC, eerily coinciding with Plato&#8217;s apparent date for the war with <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/gobekli-tepe-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26707\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/gobekli-tepe-2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"gobekli tepe 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/gobekli-tepe-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/gobekli-tepe-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/gobekli-tepe-2.jpg 575w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Atlantis. In fairness to those who accept Plato&#8217;s date literally, the existence of the monuments at G\u00f6bekli\u00a0 Tepe at such an early date at least indicates the <em>possibility, <\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>of Plato\u2019s date being correct. However, I am not altogether happy with the date assigned to the site, as I cannot imagine how the stones were carved to such a high standard without metal tools, a development still some thousands of years in the future. Dating details are available online<sup>(ar)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>There is now a claim that another site, K\u00f6rtik Tepe, may even be older<sup>(av)<\/sup>, with a suggested date of 12,500 to 11,700 years ago! Furthermore, another site, Boncuklu Tarla, located about 300 kilometres east of G\u00f6bekli Tepe, is also believed to be older<sup>(br<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>A paper by Schmidt on the development of agriculture at the time of G\u00f6bekli Tepe is freely available online<sup>(<\/sup><sup>ao<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Sanliurfa, mentioned above was ancient Urfa and is suggested by <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/david-rohl\/\">David Rohl <\/a>as the original Ur of the Chaldees, the birthplace of Abraham.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>The site consists of megalithic stone circles with T-shaped uprights. On some of them are carved a variety of animals. What is most peculiar is the fact that these monuments were completely and deliberately buried after hundreds of years of use, according to Schmidt. One suggestion is that the site is pre-diluvian and was buried by the biblical Flood! However, a 2021 paper by four Turkish scholars, has advocated the idea that the burial of the site was a consequence of erosion rather than human effort<sup>(ca)<\/sup>.<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> <br \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/schoch-robert-m\/\">Robert Schoch<\/a> and his wife, Catherine Ulissey, published a lengthy paper, which was updated in December 2024, endorsing Schmidt&#8217;s theory regarding the intentional burial of the site. But they go further, much further &#8211; <em>&#8220;<\/em><em>This article focuses on the apparent packing of various structures across Egypt, with reference to the rigorously excavated site of G\u00f6bekli Tepe in Turkey where the intentional burial in very ancient times is well-attested to by the physical evidence. G\u00f6bekli Tepe remained covered with protective materials for over 10,000 years and therefore was in relatively pristine condition when excavated. The sites in Egypt, however, have been lived in for thousands of years, with one pharaoh after the next re-appropriating what they wished. For this reason, the evidence is less clear in Egypt and, despite the excavations and research that have been carried out along the Nile for centuries, the profound implications of the intentional burial of so many sites has been obscured.&#8221;<\/em><sup>(cb<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>A paper by Alastair Coombs entitled, <em>The Atlantis Twins, <\/em>offered further thoughts on possible prehistoric references, including a suggested link with G\u00f6bekli Tepe. This was expanded and retitled, as <em>G\u00f6bekli Tepe &amp; the Atlantis Twins <\/em>and later published on Graham Hancock&#8217;s website<sup>(aq)(bx)<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Schmidt was convinced that this site marked the transition from a hunter-gatherer to an agricultural society. An interesting article is to be found in the March\/April 2009 issue of <em>S<\/em><em>audi <\/em><em>A<\/em><em>ramco <\/em><em>W<\/em><em>orld<\/em> and on its website<sup>(<\/sup><sup>a<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>The consensus now is that G\u00f6bekli Tepe is the oldest known temple in the world, predating the temples of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/malta\/\">Malta<\/a> by an astonishing 4,000-5,000 years. This, of course, is based on the dating offered by Schmidt, which may require revision. Further north is the ancient site of Kahin Tepe, considered to be the oldest temple site in the Black Sea region. The remains of structures there have been identified as belonging to the Aceramic Neolithic Period, dating back as far as 12,000 years ago<sup>(bf)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>However,<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/adams-calendar-n\/\"> Adam\u2019s Calendar<\/a><sup>(<\/sup><sup>c<\/sup><sup>) <\/sup>in Mpumalanga, South Africa, has been dated to over 70,000 BC, which, if true, would throw an even greater number of theories onto the scrap heap.<b> <\/b>However, such dates are highly speculative and, at this point, without any scientific basis.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">An imaginative article by Tom Knox, in the UK&#8217;s <\/span><em style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Daily Mail Online,<\/em><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> suggested that G\u00f6bekli Tepe may be connected with the <\/span><a style=\"font-size: inherit;\" href=\"#GardenofEden\">Garden of Eden<\/a><sup>(bd<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>. Klaus Schmidt commented that <sup>\u00a0<\/sup><em>&#8216;Gobekli Tepe is not the Garden of Eden: it is a temple in Eden.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>However, the idea that G\u00f6bekli Tepe is a temple site has been challenged by Professor Ted Banning at the University of Toronto, who has claimed<sup>(j)<\/sup> that it was \u2018one of the world\u2019s biggest garbage dumps\u2019 suggested by the amounts of bones, tools and charcoal found there. Instead, he claims that the structures were homes. I find this unconvincing. Needless to say, Schmidt was also unhappy with Banning\u2019s contention and was writing a rebuttal of his claim, which I&#8217;m not sure if it was completed or published.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Readers might be interested in comparing the monuments of Gobekli Tepe with the <em>taulas <\/em>of Menorca<sup>(d) <\/sup>at the far end of the Mediterranean.\u00a0Some of\u00a0which are also to be found in clusters.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Studies have confirmed astronomical alignments at these sites<sup>(i)<\/sup>.<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong>A German site has highlighted a possible connection<sup>(ac)<\/sup>. The most extensive publication on the subject of <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/taulas-n\/\">taulas<\/a> was published in 1995, by Hochsieder &amp; Kn\u00f6sel, in French<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/h-j\/\"><sup>1064<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>A 2020 paper by Gil Haklay &amp; Avi Gopher has concluded that their <em>&#8220;architectural<\/em><em> formal analysis (and the central points calculated)<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Gobekli-Triangle.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57075 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Gobekli-Triangle-239x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Gobekli-Triangle-239x300.png 239w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Gobekli-Triangle-817x1024.png 817w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Gobekli-Triangle-768x962.png 768w, https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Gobekli-Triangle.png 969w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a> has brought to light an underlying geometric pattern based on an equilateral triangle and a set of main perpendicular axes that ties together Enclosures B, C and D under a single, rather complex geometric design.\u00a0This suggests a new understanding of what has been initially planned and then built in the enclosure&#8217;s system of the main excavation area.\u00a0It offers an answer to questions on the chronological relationships between the three enclosures, and it evokes insights regarding the architectural design process and how such architectural complexity could have been achieved.&#8221;<\/em> <sup>(bv)<\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>National Geographic magazine published a leading article on the site in June 2011, which can be read online<sup>(e)<\/sup>. \u00a0A new website devoted to G\u00f6bekli Tepe with more images is worth a visit<sup>(f)<\/sup>. Another well-illustrated site<sup>(k) <\/sup>has drawn attention to the possibility that the animal images at the site match constellations at the time they were carved. It will be interesting to see how this particular investigation proceeds.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Nevertheless, another temple site 30 km to the northwest, Nevali \u00c7ori<sup>(g)<\/sup>, dated to 6,000 BC, also has T-shaped pillars, but in my mind, it raises the question of how the same form of the monument would still be in use three and a half thousand years later. I would expect some stylistic evolution unless, of course, the dating of the two sites should be closer.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Another large site designated as Karahan Tepe<sup>(t)<\/sup>, which is 63 km east of Sanliurfa is &#8216;reported&#8217; to have hundreds of pillars, many T-shaped<sup>(h)<\/sup>. In September 2019, a start on the excavation of the site was announced<sup>(aw)<\/sup>.<b> <\/b>Work continued through 2020 and is expected to restart in 2021<sup>(bg)<\/sup>. The suggestion now is that Karahan Tepe may be older than G\u00f6bekli Tepe<sup>(bq)<\/sup>.<b> <\/b>Andrew Collins has written a paper entitled, <em>Karahan\u00a0Tepe: G\u00f6bekli Tepe\u2019s Sister Site\u2014Another Temple Of\u00a0The<\/em> Stars?<sup>(bj)\u00a0<\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>A Norwegian website<sup>(l)<\/sup> has some little-seen images of the G\u00f6bekli Tepe site.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>A\u00a0 new suggestion has now emerged linking <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/easter-island-n\/\">Easter Island <\/a>and the ongoing discoveries at G\u00f6bekli Tepe. This seems to date back to early 2010<sup>(m) <\/sup>and has now been given greater prominence in <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/schoch-robert-m\/\">Robert Schoch\u2019s <\/a>most recent book, <em>Forgotten Civilization<\/em><sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/s\/\">867<\/a>]<\/sup>. A 2013 article<sup>(n)<\/sup> by Schoch includes a report of a recent visit by him to the site.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>In July 2013 a paper<sup>(o)(p)<\/sup> by Giulio Magli explores the possibility that G\u00f6bekli Tepe had been constructed to <i>\u201c<\/i><i>celebrate and successively follow the appearance of a new, extremely brilliant star in the southern skies: Sirius.\u201d <\/i>Sirius is the brightest star and had significance for ancient Egyptians and Greeks and features in <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/temple-robert\/\">Robert Temple\u2019s <\/a>theory regarding the astronomical knowledge of the Dogon people of Mali.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/laoupi-amanda-n\/\">Amanda Laoupi<\/a> has written a five-part paper in which she expands on the significance of Sirius for the <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/pelasgians\/\">Pelasgians<\/a>, among others<sup>(al)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Magli\u2019s suggestion has been dismissed in a paper<sup>(q)<\/sup> by <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/collins-andrew\/\">Andrew Collins <\/a>and Rodney Hale, who have made the alternative proposal that if there was an intended astronomical orientation, a more likely candidate was the star Deneb in the Cygnus constellation. Collins has already explored the significance of that constellation in the ancient cultures of America, Egypt and Britain in <i>The Cygnus Mystery<\/i><sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/c\/\">075<\/a>]<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Nevertheless, Anthony Murphy and Richard Moore have written<sup>(bi)<\/sup> about the Cygnus Constellation and a possible link with Ireland\u2019s Newgrange <sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/m\/\">1441<\/a>]<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>In 2014, Collins devoted an entire book to the G\u00f6bekli Tepe discoveries with the publication of <em>G\u00f6bekli Tepe: Genesis of the <em>Gods<\/em><\/em><sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/c\/\"><sup>983<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup>.<em>\u00a0<\/em>In it, he refers briefly to Atlantis commenting that <em>\u201cPlato\u2019s account of Atlantis might well be based on some kind of historical reality\u201d<\/em> (p.168). This seems to lack the certainty he showed in his best-selling,\u00a0<em>Gateway to Atlantis<\/em><sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/c\/\">073<\/a>]<\/sup><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span> <\/em><\/span><\/strong>Collins and Rodney Hale have published a paper in which they discuss the possible astronomical value of &#8216;Pillar 43&#8217; at G\u00f6bekli Tepe<sup>(bw)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Additionally, Collins has produced a 68-minute video entitled, <em>Gobekli Tepe and the Watchers of Eden,<\/em> referencing his earlier work<sup>(w)<\/sup>. A preview<sup>(y)<\/sup> of <em>Genesis of the Gods <\/em>has been published on several websites including, <em>Academia.edu<\/em> and <em>Graham Hancock.com<\/em>. Collins&#8217; book has been heavily criticised as pseudoscience<sup>(an) <\/sup>by at least one reviewer on &#8216;goodreads&#8217;.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Hugh Newman, author and self-confessed \u2018megalithomaniac\u2019 has now proposed links between G\u00f6bekli Tepe and ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/peru\/\">Peru<\/a>. He has also managed to include G\u00f6bekli Tepe in his theory of earth grids<sup>(r)<\/sup>. Another writer, Trebha Cooper, claims a link between France and G\u00f6bekli Tepe<sup>(x)<\/sup>!<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>The unexpected death of Klaus Schmidt (1953-2014) took place on Sunday, July 20th, 2014 and was announced shortly afterwards<sup>(s)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>In September 2014, archaeologists on the site described it as \u201cthe oldest known sculptural workshop on the planet.\u201d<sup>(v)<\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>The excellent, <em>The Stream of Time <\/em>website from &#8216;antiquated antiquarian&#8217; has a couple of well-illustrated blogs relating to G\u00f6bekli Tepe<sup>(z) <\/sup>and the region generally.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>In April 2015, the <em>Ancient Origins<\/em> website published a two-part article<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(ag)<\/span><\/sup> by Ozg\u00fcr Baris Etli, a Turkish scientist, in which he discusses the most recent discoveries on the site. The article<sup>(aa)(ab)<\/sup> is well illustrated as the author reviews the carvings there and their possible relevance to the early development of religion. In a 2016 article<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>(ah)<\/sup><\/span>, on the same site, he has drawn attention to the similarity of the position of carved hands at G\u00f6bekli Tepe, Easter Island, as well as some other sites around the world where the hands are shown meeting at the navel. The significance of this, if any, is not known.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>What has been identified as possibly the earliest pictograph in the world has now been revealed at the G\u00f6bekli Tepe site<sup>(ad)<\/sup>. Andrew Collins\u00a0also claims<sup>(ae)<\/sup> to have found the earliest depiction of G\u00f6bekli Tepe in the museum at Sanliurfa. Not unexpectedly <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/colavito-jason-n\/\">Jason Colavito <\/a>has a few words to say on the matter<sup>(af)<\/sup>. Colavito also has a critical view<sup>(ai)<\/sup> of the recent Turkish documentary, supported by the government, which claims that G\u00f6bekli Tepe was built by Telah, Abraham&#8217;s father, and destroyed by Abraham. So who built Nevali \u00c7ori?<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>A 2016 paper<sup>(bm)<\/sup> by J.A. Belmonte, et al offers a review of recent archaeoastronomical studies in the Eastern Mediterranean, including G\u00f6bekli, the Hittites and the Egyptians.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>The March 2017\u00a0edition of <em>Mediterranean Archaeology &amp; Archaeometry<\/em> (Vol.17, No.1, pp 233-250) includes a paper<sup>(aj)<\/sup> by M.B. Sweatman &amp; D. Tsikritsis of the University of Edinburgh. In it, they claim the animals carved on the G\u00f6bekli Tepe pillars represent asterisms and that they found <em>&#8220;<\/em><em>compelling evidence that the famous \u2018Vulture Stone\u2019 is a date stamp for 10950 BC \u00b1 250 yrs, which corresponds closely to the proposed Younger Dryas event, estimated at 10890 BC.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0 Understandably, their claims have been met with stony scepticism<sup>(ak)<\/sup>. Sweatman has expanded his ideas further in <em>Prehistory Decoded <\/em><sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/main-bibliography\/s\/\"><sup>1621<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Shortly after Sweatman &amp; Tsikritsis (S&amp;T) published their paper, a number of the archaeologists who have excavated at the site quickly published, in the same journal, several critical comments relating to the methodology and conclusions of S&amp;T<sup>(bn)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>The interpretation of the carvings has exercised the imagination of various researchers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hancock-graham\/\">Graham Hancock<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/kaulins-andis\/\">Andis Kaulins<\/a>, and Paul Burley, as well as Sweatman and Tsikritsis, but no consensus has emerged, apart from an element of an agreement that some form of zodiacal representation is involved. The range of decipherments is discussed in detail in a paper by Edmond Furter, who is disinclined to accept the zodiac explanation<sup>(bl)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>In an August 2019 article on Graham Hancock&#8217;s website<sup>(at) <\/sup> Sweatman ventures further into the realms of wild speculation with the suggestion that G\u00f6bekli Tepe should be considered the world&#8217;s first &#8216;university&#8217;. This obviously had Jason Colavito spluttering into his cereal bowl, prompting him to apply his literary scalpel to the idea<sup>(au)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>A 2020 review of the discoveries at GT in <em>Discover<\/em> magazine, finishes with some critical remarks aimed at Graham Hancock&#8217;s theories regarding the purpose of the site &#8211; <em>&#8220;<\/em><em>Hancock&#8217;s ideas have helped fuel the surge of interest in Gobekli Tepe as an ancient observatory. But he has an even more fantastical claim about the vulture and other carvings on Pillar 43. He believes, again without evidence, that it&#8217;s an ancient constellation diagram that shows the winter solstice against a backdrop of today\u2019s modern sky.&#8221;<\/em><sup>(bs)<\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Constantinos Ragazas has produced a paper<sup>(am)<\/sup> in which he argues against the early date ascribed to G\u00f6bekli Tepe by Schmidt and others. He ponders on &#8220;<em>How a Date can go wrong: Were G\u00f6bekli Tepe built 600 BC by Babylonians\/Assyrians, no one would flinch a thought. It is the Date that makes G\u00f6bekli Tepe an enigma. The great dilemma for archaeologists is reconciling the date with the people that built G\u00f6bekli Tepe. Either the date is wrong or our theories of prehistoric people are wrong. And prehistoric people were more capable 12,000 years ago than all our other evidence tells us. Archaeologists trust their data over their understanding of prehistoric people. I argue the date is wrong. And prehistoric people were as we have always thought.&#8221; <\/em>While this is controversial enough, Ragazas goes further and claims that G\u00f6bekli Tepe is, in truth, the site of the &#8216;Hanging Gardens of Babylon&#8217;!<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>However, Ragazas&#8217; reservations regarding the early dating of G\u00f6bekli Tepe were given further support in an extensive 2016 paper<sup>(ap)<\/sup> by Dimitrios Dendrinos of the University of Kansas.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>In March 2019, a paper by Roger M. Pearlman put forward another radical idea, namely, that G\u00f6bekli Tepe had been founded by Noah (Noach) and his sons<sup>(as)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>There was further excitement at G\u00f6bekli Tepe in September 2019, when Andrew Collins was removed from the site and his book, <em>From the<\/em> <em>Ashes of Angels,<\/em> banned in Turkey and Collins himself may be subject to a ban. It seems that he may have expressed pro-Kurdish sentiments, which is a big no-no with the Turkish authorities. It is also speculated that some of Collins\u2019 historical views run counter to some extreme Islamic interpretation of the past!<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>2019 produced another radical theory from A.Refik Kutluer, a Turkish tourism executive, who proposed in an interesting article<sup>(ax)<\/sup> that G\u00f6bekli Tepe was a site of ritual sacrifice. He suggests the possibility that &#8220;<em>Men tried to placate the gods to avoid their anger and to keep them satisfied. As the gods punished them with natural disasters taking many lives when they became angry, men sought a way to mollify the gods, killing some of their own to ward off the gods\u2019 rage, thinking that the gods were satisfied when these people or animals were sacrificed.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>2019 also saw reports<sup>(ay<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup> of a &#8216;mini&#8217; G\u00f6bekli Tepe in the Mardin Province of southeast Turkey and dated to 11,300 years ago.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>In 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/schoch-robert-m\/\">Robert Schoch<\/a> in a paper<span lang=\"EN-GB\"><sup>(ba<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup><\/span> written with Manu Seyfzadeh, claimed that the &#8220;w<em>orld\u2019s first known written word at G\u00f6bekli<\/em> <em>Tepe on T-Shaped Pillar 18 means God&#8221;<\/em><em>. <\/em>In a recent <em>Lost Origins<\/em> podcast, Schoch repeated this claim, which led Jason Colavito to attack its credibility<span lang=\"EN-GB\"><sup>(bb<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">,<\/span>\u00a0 finding it <em>&#8220;remarkable that he (Schoch) can translate a heretofore unsuspected system of writing in a 10,000-year-old language no one alive has ever heard. After all, several writing systems from historic times, such as linear A, related to languages that were only spoken a few thousand years ago, remain largely unreadable. We can\u2019t even read Etruscan fluently, and yet Schoch has supposedly learned to read an Ice Age language! Think about that. For example, Old English is largely unintelligible to modern English speakers, while the Ice Age is removed in time from us by a factor of twenty times that chronological distance. The unlikeliness of Schoch\u2019s claim boggles the mind.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>There are now regular updates available regarding the ongoing work at the G\u00f6bekli site, with contributions from members of the G\u00f6bekli Tepe Archaeological Research Project<sup>(az<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>In 2020, Stone Age rock tombs were excavated not too far from G\u00f6bekli Tepe at the Kizilkoyun Necropolis area, adding to the importance of the region<sup>(bc<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Also, in April 2020, <em>Haaretz<\/em> published a report\u00a0 that <em>&#8220;a discovery by Israeli archaeologists suggests the\u00a0<\/em><em>G\u00f6bekli Tepe construction project<\/em><em> was even more complex than previously thought and required an amount of planning and resources thought to be impossible for those times.&#8221;<\/em><sup>(bh)<\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>In June 2021, <em>&#8220;<\/em><em>Turkey\u2019s Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Ersoy <\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hurriyetdailynews.com\/turkey-discovers-new-sites-near-famed-gobeklitepe-165875\"><strong>told reporters<\/strong><\/a><b> <\/b><\/em><em>gathered in the southeastern Turkish city of Sanliurfa that several new sites had been found in the vicinity of G\u00f6beklitepe.&#8221;<\/em> and <em>&#8220;We have [discovered] 11 more major hills on a 100-kilometre line around G\u00f6beklitepe,\u201d Ersoy declared. \u201cHere, we will give the details for the first time, and now call it 12 hills.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<em>In fact, Ersoy offered few details about what had been found at these new sites. He explained that a \u201cmajor study\u201d was on the verge of being completed and said the results of that study would be released in September 2021.&#8221;<\/em><sup>(bk<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/hancock-graham\/\">Graham Hancock <\/a>visited the Karahan Tepe site in 2020 and found a team of Turkish archaeologists well-advanced with their excavations. As their findings were unpublished until now<sup>(bp<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>, Hancock refrained from offering his observations<sup>(bo)<\/sup>. The enclosure revealed a carved human head protruding from the bedrock, as well as a number of pillars that appeared to represent phalli! Hancock echoed Minister Ersoy&#8217;s comments noting that <em>&#8220;<\/em><em>a dozen other sites of similar antiquity are under excavation in the so-called \u201cStone Hills\u201d area, a zone of intense interest to archaeologists extending for 100 square kilometres around Gobekli Tepe.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>A travel site has a useful article that should be read by anyone intending to visit Gobekli Tepe. This was last updated in August 2022<sup>(bu)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>The <em>World History Encyclopedia<\/em> offers further interesting information regarding the discoveries at the site<sup>(bt<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Fortunately, no damage was reported at Gobekli Tepe following the 2023 earthquakes in Turkey and nearby Syria. However, October 2023 brought news that further exciting discoveries have been made at both G\u00f6bekli Tepe and Karahan Tepe. At the former, a statue of a giant man, 7.5-foot-tall, and apparently clutching his penis, while at Karahan a life-size statue of a wild boar carved from limestone was found<em>. <\/em><em>\u00a0&#8220;<\/em><em>Archaeologists detected red, black and white pigments on its surface, indicating that the sculpture was once painted.&#8221;<\/em><sup>(by<\/sup><sup>)<\/sup><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Early August 2024, brought fascinating news from G\u00f6bekli Tepe, with the revelation that clear evidence has been found that its builders had developed a calendar, recording it with a series of carvings on one of the pillars. <a href=\"https:\/\/atlantipedia.ie\/samples\/sweatman-martin-b\/\">Martin Sweatman<\/a>, of the University of Edinburgh\u2019s School of Engineering, mentioned above, led the research that concluded <em>&#8220;Fresh analysis of V-shaped symbols carved onto pillars at the site has found that each V could represent a single day. This interpretation allowed researchers to count a solar calendar of 365 days on one of the pillars, consisting of 12 lunar months plus 11 extra days.&#8221;<\/em>
