Ast, Friedrich
?Friedrich Ast (1778-1841) is described by Atlantisforschung as a German classicist and philosopher who became known primarily as a historian of philosophy and a researcher of Plato.
Ast also addressed the Atlantis problem in his publication Plato’s Leben und Schriften (1816). According to Thorwald C. Franke[1255.349], Ast spoke out “against Hissmann‘s ‘ unconditional’ rejection of the Atlantis tradition. He considered Plato’s Atlantis to be a mythical legend, the historical core of which is obscure information about islands in the west, be it the Canaries or the Azores or America itself. According to Ast, Plato himself brought this information with him from Egypt. Ast opposed the then widespread view that the Atlantis story was depicted on the peplos of the small Panatheniads, as reported by the Scholiast.”
