The myth of Typhon and the destruction of Atlantis
of
Axel Famiglini
As stated in ” The End of Atlantis “, probably the lost continent was destroyed by a falling meteorite in the period 10000-9000 BC Plato in fact seems to suggest us know through the history of the myth of Phaeton, inserted in the” Timaeus “own in the paragraphs dedicated to Atlantis. However I realized that there is at least another myth that could cover the destruction of Atlantis took place through the fall of a small celestial body.
In fact in the “Natural History” by Pliny the Elder (Book II, 91) we can find an interesting reference to a comet that would bring serious damage to Egypt and Ethiopia to the times of King Typhon. Most likely this story was brought from Egypt and Hellenized, as happened then for many other myths.
He says Pliny:
A (comet), tremendous, was experienced by the peoples of Ethiopia and Egypt, and gave his name Typhoon, king of those times: he had a fiery appearance and was twisted in a spiral shape, already grim to behold, more a node of flames, so to speak, that a star.
First, following the interpretation evemeristica, we can immediately locate temporally the mythical-historical period in which it is set the event. Indeed Typhon, king of Egypt, is the Greek translation of the name of the Egyptian god Seth, probably lived in the period of the Zep-Tepi in 10000 BC-Typhon Seth is the well-known brother of Osiris, which killed the latter to envy and to get the crown. For a discussion on this subject see: Escape from the colonies of Atlantis: Osiris and Egypt and the civilizing work of Osiris, Hercules and Atlantis .
Considering that the historical period coincides with that of the destruction of Atlantis, we could easily believe that the comet Typhon was the manager of the great disasters that led to the end of the ice age, the extinction of many species and at the end of the Atlantean civilization, whose survivors had to flee their own land to start a new life.
The Greek version of the myth of Typhon is very attractive. Here reclaim the summary made by Pseudo Apollodorus in the “Library” (Book I, 6):
When the gods had won the Giants, Gea, even more angry, joins the Tartarus and, in Cilicia, which gives birth to Typhon had mixed nature, of man and beast. For the stature and strength, Typhoon was superior to all the children of Gea; to the thighs his form was a man, but that height is to overcome all the mountains; with the head often touched the stars; if stretched arms, with one reaching to the West, with the other the East; emerged from the arms themselves the heads of a hundred snakes, thighs branched huge coils of vipers that extended up to the head, emitting acute wheezing. He had wings on the whole body, the messy hair swaying on the head and cheeks, eyes throwing flames. So scary and so huge was Typhon when swung his attack against the same sky, shouting and hurling stones and hissing hot; from the mouth exhaled big flashes of fire. When the gods saw that assailed the sky, they went to take refuge in Egypt, and because he pursued them, were transformed into animals. While Typhoon was still far away, Zeus hurled lightning, when it was closer, struck him with the scythe of steel when it fled, pursued him to Mount Casio overlooking Syria. Here, seeing him covered with wounds, attacked him. But Typhon wrapped him in its coils and held him, snatched the sickle and cut off the tendons of the hands and feet; Then he took him up on his shoulders and carried him across the sea up in Cilicia, came antrum Coricio and I laid him. Put beyond the tendons, which he hid in a bearskin, and placed guard Delfine, who was half snake, half girl. But Hermes and tendons Egipan escaped secretly and they hung up to Zeus. Recovered its vigor, Zeus immediately moved from the sky in a chariot pulled by winged horses, and, hurling thunderbolts, Typhon chased up the mountain called Nisa, where the Moire misinformed him that force would buy if he tasted the fruits ephemeral. Chased again, he arrived in Thrace and, in the fight that broke out at the Emo, hurled whole mountains. But the lightning of Zeus dismissed against him, and, on the mountain, his blood flowed in rivers: why, they say, the mountain was called Emo. As he threw on the run through the Sicilian sea, Zeus hurled Etna, a mountain that is in Sicily, a very high mountain from which still erupt flames that originate, they say, lightning hurled by Zeus.
The struggle between Zeus and Typhon told could be interpreted in different ways. First would be the Greek version of the struggle between Horus, son of Osiris, and Seth to claim the throne of Osiris. Also in the giant figure of Typhon would hide the story of the meteor that struck the earth sconvolgendola radically.
Let’s examine this statement:
When the gods saw that assailed the sky, they went to take refuge in Egypt, and because he pursued them, were transformed into animals.
Probably the “sky” in this case is to be identified with Atlantis, the mythical land in the West. In fact the ancient Egyptians collocavano the world of the gods and the afterlife within the lands of the West. This land, which was a reflection of the heavenly world of the dead (the Duat), was the place where Pharaoh became Osiris and could be reborn. To the ancient Egyptians the world of the dead was a place of bliss and then it is very likely that this idea was born from the ancient memory of a prosperous country western. But also the story of the catastrophe, the destruction and countless deaths could have created the idea of ??a West dangerous, expressing it through the night journey of the Sun through the allegorical underworld. That said, we realize that there is a kind of contradiction between an underworld positive and negative. This positivity and negativity could remember the time before and after the destruction of Atlantis.
Returning to the sentence already analyzed, it repeats the story of the coming of the gods in Egypt. In fact, the same Egyptian mythology claimed that the gods (“red men”) were from one place to the west called Punt. The Punt was a place of great bliss and relaxation, after the period of the ancient kingdom was researched and identified with East Africa. However the location of Punt was original to the west. The Punt was probably Atlantis and we can assert that the gods of Egypt were perhaps the Atlanteans who were fleeing from their homeland in search of a new land where to go. And where to go? In Egypt, it was probably a long-Atlantean colony.
Furthermore, the fact that the gods turned into animals can make us understand that these exceptional men (because carriers of technology and knowledge soon forgotten in Egypt after the great catastrophe meteoric) were immediately identified by the population as barbarized Gods of local cults animalistic created by the Egyptians returned to a stage of wild life.
One of the leaders of one of the countless expeditions / Atlantean migration was perhaps “Osiris” (I would say with certainty that the name of the gods did not correspond to the real name of the people, because the god Osiris may have been a pre-dynastic god who assimilated other cults and other legends , making her own – in fact Osiris supplanted its sanctuaries more neter oldest: Andjiti at Busiris and Abydos a wolf called Khentimentiu . For this God see the comments ) that he had brought with him his wife Isis, Seth and his brother and sister Nephthys had to be already in Egypt (for the speech on the names of the see above). However, despite the fact that most likely many Atlantean refugees made ??their way to Egypt, with regard to Osiris, the issue seems to have been more complex. For more details, refer to the article Escape from the colonies of Atlantis: Osiris and Egypt .
Nonnus, the last great ancient poet, in “Dionysia”, describes in a very impressive and realistic myth of Typhon. Let us see some verses:
Canto I, 239-256
(Typhoon is shaking hands with the stars.)
The sky is all abuzz: the Pleiades sevenfold
echoed with equal number of mouths
to the seven areas of the sky raising loud cry of war,
and respond with equal clamor planets.
To see the snakes scary form the body of the giant,
the shining Serpentario shakes the hands salvific
dragons flecked with green, fed fire,
and throws them in the manner of darts spotted and sinuous;
around the blazes whistling swirls and arrows anguiformi
Uncheck oblique arc in the air trigger a Bacchic frenzy.
The Sagittarius swaggering hurls his darts,
companion of the distance to Capricorn tailed fish.
The orbit of the wagon, the Dragon shines through between the bears twins,
and flickers in his shining tail back ethereal.
Beside Erigone, Boote charioteer of the Cart
his traveling companion shake the rod with the arm shining.
Image and knees at his near Swan
Lira Starry proclaims the victory of Zeus.
This description of typhoon disaster in the starry sky can also be interpreted as a cosmological myth according to studies of Giorgio de Santillana and Hertha von Deschend “Il Mulino Hamlet”. Typhoon fact could be the great “pole” or “world tree” (axis of rotation of the earth) that moves, because of the precession of the equinoxes, and upsets the sky changing position and shape to the stars and the constellations.
In conclusion, by analyzing this myth, we could see how this could be interpreted in different ways and according to many interpretations (see: The myths in antiquity ). The myth is presented in layers and is built in later times. The difficulty lies in finding the right interpretative key for each myth. In this myth was a key historical and astronomical. Through this new information that we add to the previous knowledge of Atlantis, we can only hope to get closer to the truth.
COMMENT :
The meaning of Khentimentiu is very interesting: “What we march at the head of the West.” Perhaps Khentimentiu is a neter assimilated by the cult of Osiris who deified the head of the Atlanteans who came to Egypt after the destruction of Atlantis. Osiris would thus assimilated the characteristics of Khentimentiu. Probably the same Khentimentiu had assimilated other cults even earlier: the destruction of Atlantis to the Dynastic period there are at least 7000 years! ( back to top )
