September 2023. Hi Atlantipedes, At present I am in Sardinia for a short visit. Later we move to Sicily and Malta. The trip is purely vacational. Unfortunately, I am writing this in a dreadful apartment, sitting on a bed, with access to just one useable socket and a small Notebook. Consequently, I possibly will not […]Read More »

    Joining The Dots

I have now published my new book, Joining The Dots, which offers a fresh look at the Atlantis mystery. I have addressed the critical questions of when, where and who, using Plato’s own words, tempered with some critical thinking and a modicum of common sense.Read More »

La Fine di Atlantide The End of Atlantis

Imagine we go back in time, 3300 years ago, around the year 1300 BC (or nine thousand months – and not nine thousand years – before Solon, from whose narration Plato philosopher drew his information about Atlantis).
What is now the Mediterranean Sea had to be at that time divided into two seas, at different heights and with no communication between them.
To the west, the basin consists of the western Mediterranean and the Tyrrhenian were – like today – in communication with the waters of the Ocean, through the Strait of the Gibraltar, which was opened more than a thousand years earlier, and its waters had now reached a level similar to that of today, thanks to the constant guaranteed by the opening of the mouth of communication with the ocean waters.
A second sea, to the east, went from the Small Sirte to Syro-Palestinian coast and included the Ionian Sea, the Adriatic sea and the Sea of ??Candia (while the Aegean territory, all emerged, was a vast plain dotted with mountains of volcanic origin) . It was well separated from the first, because instead of the Strait of Messina, there was a rocky isthmus and what is now the Strait of Sicily was then a fertile plain, watered by rivers and protected by high mountains, descending gently to the shores of the Sea lower.
The waters of the eastern Mediterranean had to be at an altitude of about 300 m below today’s. We will refer to this dimension as “ground zero” to measure the relative altitudes.
The extreme west of the eastern Mediterranean, not far from where now stands the island of Malta, two narrow openings gave access to a great gulf, deep more than a thousand meters. Around that gulf, protected at its entrance by a large island, had risen a thriving civilization, founded by a Libyan tribe that was perhaps dropped up to here from the high mountains of the south.
Who was originated from the east, from Crete or Egypt, would see a rocky coastline, pretty steep, in which there were two narrow, the sides of a large island, with an area of ??between 11,000 and 17,000 km2, which is stood up to a hill of about 150 m. The two narrow north and west of the island measured between 15 and 30 km. However, could also be a peninsula, with only close to its northern end, as the only access to the great gulf.
We can identify in this system close the “Pillars of Hercules” ancient mythology (and one of the two “columns” appears identifiable in the rocky massif of the island of Malta).
The highest hills of that system still emerging from the sea in the Strait of Sicily and Pantelleria, the Pelagie Islands (Lampedusa and Linosa), the Maltese Islands.
Lungo la sponda settentrionale del golfo si ergeva un sistema di rilievi, un po’ più elevato di 500 m, che dominava il panorama (le attuali isole maltesi); Along the north shore of the bay stood a system of reliefs, a bit ‘higher than 500 m, which dominated the scene (the current Maltese islands); le coste meridionali erano un po’ più dolci, ma un lungo e piatto rilievo si elevava vicino al mare, sino ad oltre 400 m dal pelo delle onde, e di fronte ad esso, non lontano, un’alta isola sorgeva dalle acque del bacino (le attuali isole di Lampedusa – la prima – e di Linosa, quella staccata dalla costa). the southern coasts were a little ‘sweeter, but a long, flat relief had been erected near the sea, up to 400 m from the surface of the waves, and in front of it, not far away, a high island rose from the waters of the basin (the current islands of Lampedusa – the first – and Linosa, that detached from the coast). In the northwest, down the great gulf, loomed a massive volcanic peak, up more than 1100 m from the waters of the sea. To use a clear reference current, it was what we now know as the island of Pantelleria. Behind it, to the north, the coast rose to demarcate the horizon, to a height of at least 300 m. Beyond there was another sea, he received for centuries the contribution of water from the ocean, and from there “it was possible to reach the other islands for those who then were making crossings and from the islands to the continent opposite, who was around that true sea (pontos) … In fact all that is within the limits of the mouth which I mentioned looks like a port characterized by a narrow entrance: that other sea, however, you can actually call it sea that land that completely surrounds you and really quite rightly call the continent. ” (Platone). (Plato).

MAPPA PER LA LOCALIZZAZIONE DI ATLANTIDE MAP TO THE LOCATION OF ATLANTIS

That sea, which was for centuries in connection with the Ocean waters through the mouth of Gibraltar, was very close to spill over on this side of the bank and its spread to the Gulf and the Eastern Mediterranean, located at a lower altitude. This was the real curse hanging over the head of the people (Atlases-Tjehenu) who lived on those lands, but perhaps they were convinced that the situation of precarious balance would last forever, as they had always lived.
To the west of the “port” or gulf that we have described stretched wide, fertile irrigated plain, that we return to describe with words used by Plato. It received from the waters north of Medjerda, now down to the sea not far from Tunis, and from the west could be thoroughly irrigated with waters coming from the large “sea” inside, the water was to be pretty sweet. That extension of plain corresponds to measurements and physical-climatic, to the territory described by Plato: the distance from the closure of the Gulf, to the south, to the shores of the western Mediterranean, is 540 km (three thousand stages), and that the gulf coast up to the mountains behind the plain, which bordered the inland sea, 360 km (two thousand stages).
The philosopher said that the Atlanteans cultivated – among other things – dates and bananas, in the midst of a fauna that stood out the presence of elephants.
From the coast, the plain rose gently to the west, in the direction of a ridge of hills of volcanic origin, rich in metal deposits, the morphological structure mainly tuff. Beyond the ridge, about 450 km away from the waters of the Mediterranean, lay a huge pool of water: a real sea, the surface of which was located at an altitude of about 650 m above the Mediterranean. That sea collected the waters of a large catchment, who went by the current mass of the Aures, north, south up to the peaks of the Tassili and Ahaggar (the “Atlas mountains,” according to the text of Herodotus), from which down the river that now bears the name of Wed Igharghar. Its waters, in turn, fed an emissary who came down to the east, to the Mediterranean: a perennial river, which irrigated lands of the vast plain.
When the water touched the highest level that sea could reach a depth of about 350-380 m and had an almost circular shape, with an area of ??over 280,000 km2, comparable in extent to that of the entire Italian peninsula. In the bottom of its basin is today a great sand sediment, the Grand Erg Oriental (Igharghar): one of the largest sand deserts in the world. It can be supposed that great sea was attributed in ancient times the primitive name of “ocean (pelagos) Atlantic”. For convenience, as the ancient myth put in that region the Garden of the Hesperides and still its bottom desiccated called “Chott el Djerid” (dried swamp garden, the palm grove), we’ll call him “the sea of ??the Gardens”.
To the southwest of the Sea Gardens, a distance of another 500 km, rose to the sky the great rocky massif of the Atlas mountain … it is now known as Berber Ahaggar, “noble”. Ricorriamo alla descrizione offertane da Erodoto: Recourse to the description offertane by Herodotus:
“Is narrow and circular on all sides and high <allegedly <not much that its peaks can be seen: in fact, never leave them in the clouds, summer or winter. The natives say that it is a column of sky “.
The highest peaks of the massif, in the mountain now called Atakor, were almost 2800 m higher than the water level of the ocean (ie 3400 above the level of the Mediterranean at the time). Alle pendici di quella montagna racconta Erodoto viveva un tempo il popolo degli Atlanti: On the slopes of the mountain tells Herodotus once lived the people of the atlases:
“From this mountain, the villagers have taken the name, they call it Atlases. They say that they do not feed on any living being and have no dreams.
Two main routes traditionally lead from the shores of the Mediterranean to the mountains of Ahaggar, and run the one along the west bank of the ancient Sea Gardens (is the road that leads to the oasis of El Golea and Ghardaia, “high places “of Saharan tourism, whose wed when they bring water still point in the direction of the great sea dried), the other along its eastern shore, and is the great” road wagons “, sprinkled with paintings and rock carvings, described in its stages and oasis from the story of Herodotus, traveled in his time even by Roman troops who penetrated Africa until the Niger basin. The northern shore was rocky, the same type of rocks that shattered in the disaster that caused the end of Atlantis: are the gorges and canyons that run through the south side of the mountains of Aures and that, in the vicinity of Bou Saada, go on to lead first sands of the great sea. The bottom of that great seared sea is still occupied by an impenetrable wilderness of sand. To the west, in the primitive basin, still runs from south to north a water table rich enough to provide life and nourishment to the oases of Souf: in this region is sort El Wed and to a share in the most high, towards ‘old west bank, are Wargla and oil fields of Hassi Messaoud.
In that region there lived a Libyan people, or “pre-Libyan”, prosperous agriculture and commerce, with its own structure were “confederates” in a sort of empire. Quegli uomini erano grandi costruttori e grandi navigatori e usavano una scrittura, presumibilmente simile a quella libico-berbera; These men were great builders and great navigators and used a writing, presumably similar to the Libyan-Berber; nei geroglifici egizi erano chiamato Tjehenu e nei testi greci Atlantói. in Egyptian hieroglyphs were called Tjehenu and Greek texts Atlantói. Several people were their confederates or vassals (and shall we find certain list of the Sea Peoples who swarmed into Egypt, after the final catastrophe).

A war chariot and hunting, by cave paintings of Jabbaren, in the massif of the Tassili, between Algeria and Libya.

If we want to try to bring together the clues offered by the various authors of the classical period, the people could have come to the shores of the Mediterranean from the great mountains of the interior, called Atlas, beyond the sea “suspended”, with a migration of more than 2000 km. Since at least 3000 BC Atlases were able to build with large stone blocks fortified cities and lived in constant confrontation with the empire of the Pharaohs, in that long confrontation that some scholars have called “the war of the bronze.” Among the products of vital importance for the diffusion of technology, they had a monopoly of important deposits of obsidian, a lithic material (volcanic glass) very valuable for the production of blades and other everyday objects. Among the main sources of obsidian in the Mediterranean, are at the highest volcanic peak inftti Pantelleria, located right at the bottom of their great gulf) and the Aeolian Islands, which had to be part of the territories under their control.
The mines of native copper (Orei-chalkos) were located on the hills behind the plain Atlantis, but a great technological innovation was established by the use of bronze alloy of copper and tin, with better hardness and resistance.
The strategic objective to obtain a monopoly of the bronze was the control of the tin mines, of which Africa is lacking. The Pharaohs supported for this the long war against the Hittites and conquered the control of the mines of Anatolia. Atlases had to turn altroveò their pond came from the south-west of the Iberian peninsula, and perhaps from Cornwall. In fact, the network of their business relations may have been connected with the spread of the “megalithic cultures” in Europe and in the western Mediterranean.
According to the story developed by Plato in his Dialogues, the company Atlantis was structured in a state system (a confederation of small monarchies, it seems to be able to interpret the story of the philosopher), who practiced agriculture, built cities, fused metals (gold, copper and tin) and had found a way to tie them to get the bronze, knew the writing, had practiced an expansionism of conquests extended until Tirrenia (current Lazio and Tuscany), fought for 2000 years against the rulers of Egypt and had entered into conflict with Pelasgian populations that lived on the shores of the Aegean plain … his fighters were depicted in Egyptian reliefs and paintings in the cave of the ski safari jackets, used chariots drawn by horses and hunting, and Plato dwells long on a set of customs of that people over which, today, we can not express many doubts …

According to Plato, the priests of Sais avevaro told Solon that big drought, never seen before, had calcined the whole earth, huge fires had raged on lands and destroyed forests, lightning had fallen from heaven, earthquakes had shaken the planet, causing large and considerable destruction, searing springs and rivers. Droughts and floods would have been incurred huge trumpets of water would be poured out upon the earth, swallowing – among other things – the island of Atlas. Those cataclysms seemed to mark a transition, the transition from a period with a warmer climate to another phase, with living conditions tougher.
These descriptions correspond to climate change that could be actually occurred in sec. XIII aC? XIII BC?

According to other contemporary documents (the Egyptian inscriptions of Medinet Habu, the biblical Exodus), the disasters described really happened. Fu proprio verso il sec. It was toward the sec. XIII BC that Libya (North Africa) experienced the culmination of a major phase of desertification. Karnak inscription states: “The Libyans are in Egypt to try to survive.” Even the myth of Phaeton may remember a series of dramatic drought that hit the Mediterranean, “the origin of the history of the Greeks.”

All over the world that we have described ended in the space of twenty-four hours in a day than a year between 1235 and 1220 BC. A series of earthquakes seriously cracked the consistency of rock weirs (made of tuff and therefore quite friable, perhaps already weakened by water infiltration) and opened some gaps, which soon gave way to the pressure of the water in front of two large basins places at higher altitudes, the sea and the Mediterranean Western Sahara, constantly replenished by the waters of. The waters made their way impetuously in gullies tens of kilometers wide, with flooding, really huge, even remotely comparable to that of the Vajont, which is dramatically remained in the memory of the Italians. While calculating for defect the volume of sea Saharan, we said that in ancient times it contained at least 50,000 cubic kilometers of water, up to a maximum altitude of 650 m above the Eastern Mediterranean. To determine the potential energy of that wave, we could schematically identify the center of gravity of the mass of water poured at + 350 m. Ne sarebbe derivato l’impatto di un’energia equivalente almeno a 17,5 x 1015 kgm = 17 x 1016 Joule. It results the impact of energy equivalent to at least 17.5 x 17 x 1016 = 1015 kgm Joule. Suppose also that the water level in the reservoir could be original already fallen a great deal, at the time of the disaster, which occurred because of climate change, but certainly un’ingente the shock wave could topple the plains below. To destroy and wipe out completely Atlantis, would have been enough wave consists of less than a tenth of the volume of the upper ocean, then poured on the gradient exists with the lowlands. The huge waterfall went to hit with a direct impact on the island with the capital of Atlantis, which was located at a distance of about 600 km from the dam.
Even today, those who look carefully on a map or on a satellite photo of the region of the Grand Erg Oriental, the Gulf of Gabes and Small Sirte, the ancient catastrophe transpires “between the lines”: the Gulf of Gabès appears as a real “funnel” and it is not difficult to imagine the huge mass of water that is discharged, to pour, with large amounts of mud and sand, in the gutter in front, which once had to be a fertile plain. We still have to explain, however, why that area is then left, over the centuries, flooded by the waters.

Warrior from feathered headdress, from the cycle of bas-reliefs showing the invasion of the “Sea Peoples”, in the mortuary temple of Pharaoh Ramses III at Medinet Habu (1200 BC).

The same series of earthquakes broke other rock diaphragms: first one that marked the great plains in north slope and running along a beach at a lower level, but far more dangerous because the sea was now connected to the oceans, and they received an influx of water constant. When even the waters began to pour over the plain of Atlantis, the history of that civilization was finally submerged under hundreds of feet of salt water. The two Mediterranean merged into a single sea. Was finally flooded the plain of the Aegean, dotted with mountains, which were transformed into archipelagos. For several centuries, the Achaeans and other ancestors of Mediterranean cultures saw the water coming up, covered their ports, coastal cities and carried away their best arable land … Some of them tried to conquer the only possible refuge , the great plain that rose along the great river Nile, away from the edge of the sea … but they were rejected or absorbed by the great civilization that already, along those shores, had built an empire, destined to last for centuries and to leave an imprint of himself immortal …
All that remained imprinted in the myths of origin of Greek lineage, with the flood of Deucalion and Pyrrha, with the great epics of Heracles and the Argonauts.
The framework of the cataclysm appears complete if we imagine that the same series of earthquakes provoked the collapse of the diaphragm (rocky isthmus) linking Italy to Sicily, with the consequent opening of the Strait of Messina.
The impetus of the current dug a deep furrow, a bed in the middle of the winding channel of Sicily, chipping and breaking the rocks of least resistance, and went to bifurcate, with violence against the rocks larger imposing volcanic peak of Pantelleria. Il risultato dei cataclismi di quel periodo dovette essere un flusso di corrente verso est, dalla portata molto maggiore di quella che, attraverso Gibilterra, alimentava il livello del Mediterraneo; The result of the cataclysms of that period had to be a current flow to the east, the reach much greater than that which, through Gibraltar, fed the level of the Mediterranean; un flusso che durò a lungo, il cui effetto fu probabilmente rafforzato da quello proveniente dallo stretto di Messina. a flow that lasted a long time, the effect of which was probably reinforced by the one coming from the Strait of Messina. It can be calculated that rising waters in the Mediterranean until the current level has nonetheless taken a few centuries. The water flowed like a fast current in the sands and mud that had poured into the Gulf of Sirte by the great sea Little Sahara, and climbed up to the level of the Dardanelles, the Syrian coast, the Nile Delta, covering all the ports of the ancient Minoan culture, Ilio transformed into a maritime city, and pushed until there conquerors Achaeans, determined to seize the power and wealth that the new sea made them accessible. ). Others of them left towards the submerged ruins of ancient Atlantis and met other vicissitudes (the Argonauts in the region of the Hesperides …). They ended up submerged all establishments then existing port in the eastern Mediterranean. Finì sott’acqua ciò che rimaneva della civiltà di Thera, già fortemente colpita dalla gigantesca esplosione vulcanica di due secoli prima; He ended up underwater remnants of the civilization of Thera, already hit hard by the gigantic volcanic explosion of two centuries before; finirono sotto’acqua i templi maltesi, scavati nella grande roccia sacra che era stata, sino ad allora, la “sentinella” di Atlantide. ended sotto’acqua Maltese temples, carved into the great sacred rock that had been, until then, the “sentinel” of Atlantis. The Maltese stronghold appears to us as one of the two primitive “Pillars of Hercules”, and perhaps his place in this context can help to shed new light on the richness of sacred settlements, construction of underground and submarine finds that the current island and its waters offer today.
The sludge, currents and shallow waters of the Little Sirte and the Sicily Channel made a long difficult navigation, as reported by Plato and other classical authors (including narratives of the myth of the Argonauts).
If what we have is credible, Atlantis has never moved, not mired in no oceanic abyss. è stata sconvolta da immani ondate, le sue rovine sono state ricoperte da decine di metri di fango e sabbia e poi da alcune centinaia di metri d’acqua. was upset by enormous waves, its ruins have been covered by dozens of feet of mud and sand and then by some hundred meters of water.
The destruction of the economic and cultural center of Atlantis can appear connected to the “mysterious” disruptive construction of megalithic complexes, which occurred around that time in the whole area of ??the western Mediterranean: the Iberian Peninsula, as well as in Sardinia and in Corsica and we could add up to the British Isles. Gone was an important center of wealth and reference, a country of great navigators, who traded with most Western countries to import tin, essential to melt the bronze, and in exchange they exported Mediterranean obsidian and other products. The people connected to it, for which he had come to miss the main economic partner, found themselves suddenly thrown into a state of “barbarism”, or at least in the new need to be based on a system of subsistence food.

Complete emptying of the great African sea, initiated by the sudden catastrophe, was the coup de grace for the desertification of North Africa. The phenomenon continued with the drying up of the climate and with the drying up of rivers that fed the basin dell’Igharghar, and lasted more than a millennium: the level dropped to the increased evaporation and men of classical antiquity knew a Tritonis large lake, with a river Triton, coming down from the slopes of the Ahaggar beds Wed Igharghar, whose total length reached 2,000 km, according to calculations made by Butavand.
Thus assume a tragic color the events of that land of Atlantis that, according to the story Plato, had been “assigned to Poseidon”: literally, as it was located below sea level (in the sense that today assume such an expression) .
You could groped to identify the different levels coastal submerged, corresponding to the progression of the water since the catastrophe of Atlantis until the complete filling of the Mediterranean Sea to the current share. But of course, this now appears only as a utopian dream. An important confirmation, relative to ancient sea levels, could come from the in-depth research of the ancient Minoan ports, which could be identified in the seabed around the island of Crete so certainly less complex and cumbersome of a research that pointed directly to the discovery of remains in ancient Atlantis.
If now we will try to re-read Plato’s Dialogues and to compare them with “our” map of Atlantis, we have the distinct feeling that things match and go in their place. The waters of the sea and climbed gradually flooded the fertile plains of the Aegean, leaving out only the tops of the mountains, which were transformed into islands, smaller and smaller … we will realize that the “nine thousand years” of Plato must really match a long time, yes, but “to measure” the lineage of the Achaeans and the Greeks, after they settled in the Mediterranean basin.
“So much happened and major flooding for nine thousand years (there are so many courses from that time until now), the land, which in those times and events coming down from the heights, not amassed as elsewhere in mounds worthy of mention, but always flowing disappeared in the depths of the sea: therefore, as happens in small islands, were compared to those of then these bones almost sick body, being cast away the fat and soft earth and left only the body fat of the land. But then ch ‘was intact, had mountains as high hills, and plains of Felleo now these were full of rich earth, and the mountains there was a lot of forest, of which still remain manifest signs. Of the mountains there are now only to hold out nourishment bees, but it is not a very long time that there were trees cut to cover the larger buildings, and these roofs still exist. There were also many high cultivated plants and vast pastures for livestock. Every year it collected the water of the sky, and not dispersed, as now, that the dry land flowing into the sea, but the land, ricevutane much, kept it in her bosom, and reported in the cavities of clay, and from the heights the spread in the valleys, forming everywhere large eddies of sources and rivers, of which the ancient sources were still as sacred signs, that attest to the truth of my words. “
The end of the center of Atlantis, which based its power business and cultural hegemony in the western Mediterranean basin and the North-west African (we would say today, with an Arabic term, Maghreb), had to cause several serious consequences, which is trace remains in the “mysteries” of those areas:

For a long time collapsed the tin trade from the Iberian Peninsula and from Cornwall, until it was put back into vogue by Phoenician traders and Carthaginians. Egypt, in fact, was pleased with the monopoly on the bronze obtained thanks to the wars against the Hittites, and the end of Atlantis formed for the Pharaohs an unexpected aid to the abolition of a dangerous competition on the production of the precious alloy (although the arrival in ‘Mediterranean area of ??the Achaeans, with iron weapons, had considerably reduced the strategic importance of the bronze).
Disappeared “mysteriously” builders of megaliths, in the whole of the western Mediterranean. Once decreased economic resources, the local population had fallen into a regime of poverty and subsistence food, which did not allow certain the design and construction of major works.
The subsequent occupation of large islands (Sardinia and Corsica) by the peoples of the sea made sinks further into the mystery of the origins of the “people of the megaliths” that had preceded them.
A small group of survivors of the people Tjehenu preserved perhaps the memory of a part of the ancient myths. The legendary Queen Tin Hinan, buried in the massif Ahaggar, in the heart of the Sahara, it may be a trace, at least in the permanence of the name, as well as the alphabet Tifinagh, used in the most ancient Libyan-Berber languages. Certainly, however, the size and scope of this catastrophe described above were such as to exterminate the entire management team, who had to live in the capital city and in the vast and fertile plains, devastated by the wave overtopping of the “sea of ??the Gardens”.

An objection that happened to me to receive several times, during the course of this investigation, was, “but if the whole story was so obvious, because no one has ever written before?” The answer is very simple: “it is because someone has written, we can tell this story. He has written Plato, and with great precision, have written the important parts Eudoxus of Cnidus, Diodorus of Sicily and other ancient authors, I have written and depicted elsewhere chroniclers of ancient Egypt, with a precision that would be enviable by many modern reporters … it came to collect a number of “parts”, put them together and go on the trail of a disaster whose survivors are left to tell the tale … a “Vajont” of ancient times, took place in a space and in an incredibly close to us, much more than all our imagination does not allow us to imagine.
We must be grateful to the attention of Plato that has passed with such a wealth of detail the report of Solon on Atlantis: a memory that could have disappeared, buried in oblivion, like many other forgotten events in the course of human history.
