Italos
Italos was king of the Sicels who were early inhabitants of Sicily. It is claimed by the historian Thucydides that Italos gave his name to Italy. A more detailed overview of the development of Italy’s name is available online(c).
Thorwald Franke submitted a paper to the 2008 Atlantis Conference in Athens in which he identified Atlas with Italos(a) and the island of Sicily with the island of Atlantis. In October 2010, Franke revised his views(b), admitting that there were weaknesses in his original presentation which requires further research.
