An A-Z Guide to the Search for Plato's Atlantis

Antonio Usai (1957- ) was born in Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, but now lives in Rome where he works as an Art Historian. He has written a number of papers(a) locating the Pillars of Heracles within the Mediterranean at the Strait of Sicily. Included in his work is a critique(b) of Sergio Frau’s book[302]. Unfortunately, these articles seem to be available in Italian only.

Usai followed a reading of Frau’s book with a study of the works of Herodotus, Aristotle, Polybius and Strabo among others. He was drawn to the story of Hanno’s voyage from Carthage, particularly where it is recorded that after sailing through the Pillars of Heracles, they found Syrtis Minor was on their right.

This would only make sense if the Pillars had been in the Strait of Sicily and Hanno had left Carthage and turned east passing through them and  then followed the coast south towards Syrtis Minor. A number of translations of the Periplus (Sea Voyage Guide) of Hanno are available on the Internet(d).
